עה"פ [בחמישי דפ' חוקת] "דרך האתרים" פרש"י "דרך הנגב שהלכו בה מרגלים שנאמר ויעלו בנגב" (וענינם הי' "לתור את הארץ"). הטעם שלא כתוב בפירוש "דרך הנגב" הוא כי אז הי' קשה למה הלכו שם הרי "עמלק יושב בארץ הנגב"?! ולכן נאמר "דרך האתרים" – "שהלכו בה מרגלים" והמרגלים סללו את הדרך עבורם. ואע"פ שמענין המרגלים יצא ענין בלתי-רצוי, אבל: א) "אותה שעה כשרים היו". ב) הי' זה בכחו של משה כי הוא צוה אותם ללכת שם. וההוראה הנפלאה: ישנו קיום אפי' לפעולה אחת של יהודים כאלו שבגללם התעכבו בנ"י וכו' במדבר, עד שבדרכם לכבוש את א"י הלכו בנ"י בדרך "שהלכו בה מרגלים" לפני 39 שנה! ומזה רואים גודל מעלתו אפי' של יהודי שעשה רק פעולה טובה אחת, וכפתגם "אַז עס קומט אַראָפּ אַ נשמה אויף דער וועלט און לעבט אָפּ 70-80 יאָר צוליב טאָן אַ טובה אַ אידן". ועוד.

Synopsis
On the words [in Chamishi of Parashas Chukas], “the route of the scouts,” Rashi explains: “The southern route, taken by the spies, as it says, ‘They went up in the south.’” The reason the verse doesn’t simply say “the southern route” is because then it would be difficult to understand why they went that way, being that “The Amalekites dwell in the south.” Instead the verse says, “the route of the scouts” – the route “taken by the spies,” who paved the way for them. Although the spies ended up acting undesirably, nonetheless: (a) “At that time they were righteous”; and (b) the reason they went that way is because they were commanded by Moshe to do so; it wasn’t their choice. This gives us a wondrous lesson: Even though the spies kept the Jewish people in the desert for forty years, their single act of “going up in the south” caused that later, when the Jewish people traveled on their way to conquer Eretz Yisrael, they went the same route paved by the spies thirty-nine years earlier. From this we see the tremendous power of a Jew’s single good deed, like the adage, “A soul comes down to the world and lives for 70-80 years just to do a favor for another Jew.”
