On the verse (in revi’i of Parashas Ekev), “And the Jewish people journeyed from the wells Bnei Yaakan to Moserah,” Rashi states: “What is the relevance of this here…this is also part of the reproof…When Aaron died on Hor Hahar…and the clouds of the glory departed, you were afraid of the war with the king of Arad. So you appointed a leader to return to Egypt, and you went back eight stations…There, the sons of Levi battled with you…until they forced you to return…” Then, on the verse, “At that time Hashem set apart the tribe of Levi,” Rash writes: “‘At that time’ – During the first year of your departure from Egypt, when you erred with the calf, and the sons of Levi did not err…This verse is juxtaposed to the retreat to Bnei Yaakan, to tell you that here, too, the sons of Levi did not err, but rather remained steadfast in their faith.” The lesson is: as we get closer to the Redemption, if we want to know who will continue on this path and who will become “yordim” (“descenders”) chas v’shalom, we see that those who think it’s necessary to follow the gentiles chas v’shalom and make a golden calf like them – eventually they “descend” from Eretz Yisrael, and not just physically but spiritually – ceasing to put on tefillin, ceasing to keep kosher and Shabbos etc. It is specifically “the tribe of Levi,” who didn’t err with the calf, who guarantees that Eretz Yisrael is a “Jewish land.” [To be continued.]
