[בקשר לאסיפת הרבנים שהתקיימה כמה שבועות לפנ"ז שבה הופיע רב מסויים מרוסיא ובו הראה תמונות של בנין ישיבה ומקוה משם וכו':] ישנה הלכה "עניי עירך קודמין" [מובא בפרש"י עה"פ בשלישי דפ' משפטים "אם כסף תלוה את עמי וגו'"]. וא"כ פשוט שיש לנצל כל אסיפה של כו"כ מבנ"י, לכל לראש, לחיזוק היהדות של אנשי המקום. ועכ"ז לא עלה על דעת אף א' מהנאספים לנצל האסיפה לחיזוק היהדות בעיר ניו-יארק! אף שבנוגע לזה בטוח שיכולים לעזור משא"כ בנוגע לבנ"י ש"מרחוק". ועוד: כאשר יהודי זה, שלכבודו התקיימה האסיפה, נעמד והראה תמונות של ישיבה ומקווה שם, נשאל ע"י א': 'מה קורה מצד השני של הדלת?...'. והרי הי' ידוע, גם לשואל, שההוא אינו יכול לענות על השאלה, וא"כ לא הי' שום סיבה ותועלת משאלה זו, אלא שזה הי' סימן גלוי מן השמים לנאספים: השאלה לא היתה בנוגע הישיבה והמקווה שם אלא של ניו-יארק! בזה שאלו מלמעלה אותו [השואל]: מה קורה מאחורי דלתי הישיבות כאן? כמה ילדים לא הולכים לישיבות?! עם כמה משפחות דיברתם בנוגע לטהרת המשפחה?!...! וגם לאחרי סימן גלוי זה לא ניצלו את האסיפה לדאוג ל"עניי עירך"!

[Regarding the recent rabbinic meeting where a rabbi from Russia spoke and showed pictures of a yeshivah building and mikveh there, etc.:] The halacha is that “The poor of your city take precedence” [as Rashi explains on the verse in Parashas Mishpatim, “When you lend money to My people…”]. Therefore, it is obvious that any gathering of many Jews should be utilized first and foremost to strengthen Yiddishkeit among the local community. Yet it didn’t occur to anyone at the meeting to use it as an opportunity to strengthen Yiddishkeit in New York! This, despite the fact that it is doubtful whether they could help those faraway, but it is certain that they could help locally. Moreover, when this individual in whose honor the meeting was held got up showed pictures of the yeshivah and mikveh there, someone asked him: “What’s happening on the other side of the door?” The one asking the question knew that he couldn’t answer it; thus, asking such a question could have no benefit. Rather, this was a clear sign from Heaven to those assembled: The question wasn’t about the yeshivah and mikveh there, but about the state of affairs of Jewish life here! The one asking the question was in fact himself being asked from above: What’s happening behind the doors of the yeshivos here? How many children aren’t attending yeshivah? With how many families have you discussed the importance of Taharas Hamishpacha?!
