הדרך היחידה להבטיח שהנהגת האדם תהי' עפ"י צדק ויושר ולא כחיות-בר שב"גו'נגל", היא – כאשר מחדירים ונוטעים בלבו כבר מקטנותו את ההכרה במציאות הבורא עולם ומנהיגו – "יש בעה"ב לבירה זו", והוא צוה לאדם להתנהג כך וממנו אא"פ להסתתר כי "עין רואה ואוזן שומעת"! [אבות פ"ב, שאומרים בשבת זו]. והנה לדאבוננו, המקום היחידי שבו לא מאפשרים לדבר אודות המושג של "עין רואה ואוזן שומעת" הוא בבתי-ספר הכלליים! הם עסוקים לעשות מהילדים "אנשים" – ולכן נותנים להם ידיעות שונות וכו', אבל אין לכל ענינים אלה השפעה כלל על הנהגת הילד בחיי היום-יום! ואפי' אם מדברים עם הילד אודות מדה מסויימת, מסבירים לו רק ש"אין זה הוגן" לא להתנהג בצדק ויושר, שזה לא מחייב את הילד להתנהג כך בפועל, ולא מקשרים זאת עם העובדה ש"יש בעה"ב לבירה זו" וש"עין רואה ואוזן שומעת", ושהקב"ה נמצא בכ"מ שהילד נמצא ומסתכל כיצד הוא מתנהג! והרי רק חינוך כזו מבטיח שהילדים יגדלו להיות "אנשים" ולא חיות-בר שב"גו'נגל! Synopsis
The only way to ensure that a person’s behavior will righteous and just – not like that of wild animals in the jungle – is by instilling in a child’s heart from a young age the recognition of the existence of the Creator and Ruler of the world, that He commanded man to behave a certain way, and that it’s impossible to hide from Him because He has “a seeing eye and listening ear” [Pirkei Avos ch. 2, this week’s perek]. But inexplicably, the only place where it’s forbidden to speak about Hashem and the concept of a seeing eye and a listening ear etc. is in the public schools! They’re trying to raise children and they give them all kinds of knowledge about math and science etc., but none of it has any effect on the child’s practical daily conduct! Even if they do talk to a child about behaving a certain way, they do only by explaining that it’s in the child’s best interest to be a decent person, but not that the child is obligated to do so. They don’t tie it to the existence of Hashem, the Master and Ruler of the World, Who has a seeing eye and listening ear, and the fact that wherever the child is, Hashem is with him and watches how he behaves. But only such an education ensures that the child will grow up as a human being, not like a wild animal in the jungle. [To be continued.]
