מבואר בארוכה בקונטרס התפלה ובכ"מ שעבודת התפילה צ"ל לאחרי הקדמת ההתבוננות וכו'. ובעצם – ה"ז דין מפורש בשו"ע: "קודם התפלה יחשוב מרוממות הא-ל ית' ושפלות האדם". ולמרות כ"ז – לא שמים לב לזה כראוי. והרי ענין ה"ההתבוננות" צ"ל באופן ש"רישומה ניכר" על התפלה – שירגיש בתפלתו כ"עבדא קמי מרי'". ומסתבר שכן צ"ל בכל ג' התפלות של היום. דהנה אע"פ שבנוגע להתפלות מנחה וערבית אפשר להתווכח ולומר שההתבוננות שקודם תפלת שחרית יש לה "פעולה נמשכת" על שאר התפלות, אמנם באמת לא מסתבר לומר כן, היות וענין ההתבוננות קודם התפלה אינה רק הכנה לתפלה, אלא זהו תוכן התפלה עצמה. אבל עכ"פ בנוגע לתפלת שחרית דרושה ענין ההתבוננות [בתור "לימוד זכות" י"ל, שאלו המתפללים בציבור יוצאים י"ח בזה ע"י שא' מהציבור עוסק בהתבוננות וכו'.]

Synopsis
It’s explained at length in Kuntres HaTefillah and elsewhere that davening must be prefaced by contemplation etc., and in essence, it’s an explicit halacha in Shulchan Aruch: “Before tefillah one should think about the exaltedness of Hashem and the lowliness of man.” Yet despite all this, people don’t give it proper attention. This contemplation must be done in such a way that it leaves a noticeable impression upon one’s davening, so that he feels like “a servant before his master. Ostensibly, the same obligation applies to all three tefillos; although you can argue that it leaves an impression for the whole day, and therefore it isn’t necessary for Mincha and Maariv – the truth is you can’t say that in this case, because the contemplation before davening isn’t just a preparation for davening, but an inherent component of davening itself. At any rate, for Shacharis, contemplation is certainly necessary. And to offer a defense for those who don’t do it, it can be said that when someone davens with a Minyan, his obligation is satisfied if someone else in the Minyan did the contemplation beforehand etc.
