קבלת התורה היתה דוקא לאחרי ש"וישמע יתרו .. ויבא .. אל משה .. ויאמר .. עתה ידעתי כי גדול ה' מכל אלקים וגו'" [כמ"ש בראשון דפ' יתרו], ז.א. הגם שרק עכשיו יצאו מגלות קשה ומיהרו לקבלת התורה ‏–‏ לא קיבלו את התורה עד שפעלו שגם יתרו, שלא נולד יהודי, והי' כהן און במדין, בא לידי הכרה ש"גדול הוי' מכל אלקים"! וההוראה: אין ליהודי להסתפק בזה שמאיר את ביתו ומחנך את ילדיו בדרך התומ"צ ‏–‏ כדי שהוא ובני ביתו יזכו לקבל את התורה, עליו לקרב גם אחרים ואפי' אלו שנמצאים ב"מדין" ולסחוב גם אותם לקבלת התורה, וכולם ביחד זוכים לשמוע בלשון יחיד "אנכי ה' אלקיך וגו'".

The Jewish people could only receive the Torah after “Yisro heard…and he came…to Moshe…and said…Now I know that Hashem is greater than all the deities etc.” (as it says in rishon of Parashas Yisro). Meaning, even though they had just left a harsh exile and were running to receive the Torah – they didn’t receive the Torah until they had an impact so that even Yisro, who wasn’t born a Jew, and who was a “priest of Midyan” who had served every idolatry, came to recognize that Hashem is greater than all the deities. The lesson is that a Jew must not suffice with illuminating his own home and educating his own children in the path of Torah and mitzvos – in order for him and his family to merit to receive the Torah, he must also draw others near, even those who are in “Midyan,” and bring them to receive the Torah too. Then all of them together will merit to here Hashem say “I am Hashem your G-d,” in the singular, to every Jew individually.
