[הגיעה טענה מכיוון המפלגות הדתיות נגד הרבי, שבמלחמתו בעד גיור כהלכה – עי"ז גורם הוא ח"ו, כהמרגלים בשעתם, ש"יהודים" לא יעלו לארץ הקודש! וע"ז נסב הדיבור:] הרי הראי' מסיפור המרגלים היא להיפך! – המרגלים היו אלו שאמרו "ונהי בעינינו כחגבים", הם הרגישו א"ע כ"חגבים" לעומת הגויים ה"אנשי מדות", ובמילא אמרו שיש להתנהג כ"חגב" לגבי הגוי הגדול ו"לא נוכל לעלות" וכו' [כמ"ש בפ' שלח]! ועד"ז בנדו"ד: 'למה אין לך את האומץ לקום ולומר שהיום קראת "שמע ישראל וגו'" ושאסור להשתחוות לע"ז ואשר לכן אתה לא חותם על דבר שהוא בניגוד להלכה – לתת למישהו פיסת נייר שכתוב בו שהוא יהודי ובמילא חל עליו מ"ש בברית בין הבתרים ש"לך ולזרעך נתתי את הארץ הזאת", ועי"ז יבוא יהודי, אפי' אם הוא רחוק מיהדות אבל "ישראל הוא", להתחתן עם אינו-יהודי?!' – זה הי' חטא המרגלים שהי' "בכי' לדורות" ר"ל עד הדור הזה! אלא העצה היא – "אל תיראו" כי "לחמנו הם" מכיון ש"ה' אתנו"!

Synopsis
(In response to a claim by some of the religious parties that by fighting for conversion according to halacha, the Rebbe was causing Jews not to go to Eretz Yisroel, like the spies chas v’shalom): The proof from the story of the spies is the opposite: it was the spies who said, “We seemed like grasshoppers”; they saw themselves as “grasshoppers” compared to the gentiles, the “men of great size”; therefore they claimed that one must act like a grasshopper in relation to a non-Jew, and argued that that “We cannot go up.” Similarly: Why don’t you have the courage to stand up and say that today you recited Shema Yisroel, and that it’s forbidden to bow to avodah zarah, and that you will not sign something that goes against halacha, namely, giving a non-Jew a paper saying he is Jewish, which will lead to a Jew (any Jew, even if he is far from Yiddishkeit, is still a Jew) to stumble and marry a non-Jew?! This was the sin of the spies, which was caused “weeping for generations” until this very generation Rachmana litzlan. Rather, the solution is, “Do not fear…they are our bread” because “Hashem is with us.”
