לפני יצי"מ ציווה ה' [בחמישי דפ' שמות] "ושאלה אשה משכנתה .. כלי כסף וכלי זהב וגו'". וצ"ל: הלא את כל צרכיהם במדבר קיבלו בנ"י מוכנים וכו', ולשם מה היו צריכים כסף וזהב? (ואם כדי לקיים ההבטחה ד"ואח"כ יצאו ברכוש גדול" – הרי מדוע הבטיח זאת לכתחילה?!), אלא ה' רצה שבנ"י יַראו שהם מנצלים כספם וזהבם לבנות משכן לו ית' אפי' במדבר! וההוראה: גם כאשר חיים בסביבה שהיא "דשאָנגעל" יש לעמוד בתוקף ובגאון בכל עניני יהדות, ובאופן גלוי! וכאשר הגוי שואל אותו מדוע סוגר החנות בשבת, עונה לו בגאון שהוא מאמין שבשבת "כל מלאכתך עשוי'", ואם הכסף מגיע לו – יזמין לו ה' א"ז לפני או אחרי שבת! (כסף מחילול שבת אינו שייך ליהודי, וילך בסוף לרופאים ר"ל וכיו"ב). ואף שה' רוצה שיהי' ליהודי טוב גם בגשמיות, אבל המטרה היא שינצלו זאת לעניני קדושה. ולדוגמא – ה' נותן לו כסף כדי שהוא יהי' שלוחו לתת א"ז לצדקה.

Synopsis

Before the Jewish people left Egypt, Hashem commanded (in chamishi of Parashas Shemos): “Every woman will request objects of silver and gold, and clothing, from her neighbor and from the woman in whose house she lodges….” The question is, being that Hashem provided all their needs in the desert, why did they need silver and gold? (If it was merely to fulfill the promise that “and afterward they will leave with great wealth,” why did He promise them great wealth in the first place?) The answer is that Hashem wanted the Jewish people to demonstrate that they would use their silver and gold to build a Mishkan for Him, and in the middle of the desert. The lesson is that even when living in an environment that’s like a jungle, one must stand firmly and proudly in their Yiddishkeit, and in a visible way. When a non-Jew asks why he closes his store for Shabbos, the Jew answers proudly that he believes that on Shabbos, “all your work is done.” If a certain amount of money is meant for him, Hashem will provide it either before Shabbos or after Shabbos; money earned through chilul Shabbos Rachmana litzlan does not belong to a Jew (and will ultimately go to doctors, chas v’shalom etc.) And although Hashem wants every Jew to be well-off even physically, the purpose is that he utilize these blessings for holiness. For example, Hashem grants him wealth so that he can serve as His shliach to give it to tzedakah.
