רוב הצרות והבלבולים היום נובעים מכך שאין קשר בין המוח והלב. שאע"פ שהאדם מבין בשכלו שאסור לגזול וכיו"ב, אבל "העין רואה והלב חומד", והמוח אינו שליט על הלב לשעבד את הלב למה שמבין בשכלו. ועוד יותר: הלב שליט על המוח – הוא מנצל את שכלו למלאות תאוות לבו! ואפי' אם זה מתחיל עם דברים קלים אבל מזה משתלשל ענינים חמורים יותר. [תעי'ה בעומק היער מתחילה עם סטי' קלה מ"דרך המלך"]. ובמילא מובן שהעצה לאדם כזה אינו ע"י שיתקנו את הלבושים שלו ויוסיפו לו עוד ידיעות ב(חיצוניות ה)שכל, אלא ע"י שיגיעו לפנימיות נפשו (פנימיות השכל) – שיאמרו לו את האמת שיש לו חלק אלוקה ממעל, ויש לו כחות להתנהג כדרוש ולהתקשר עם "אלוקה ממעל". רק כך יצליחו להוציא שכלו מן הגלות שנמצא בתוך תאוות הלב. וזהו תוכן מצות תפילין – שקושרים את הלב והמוח ברצועה של קדושה. ורק כך עושים אותו לבעל-תשובה.

Synopsis
The majority of the troubles and confusion in the world today stem from a disconnect between the mind and the heart. Although a person understands intellectually that he shouldn’t steal etc., “The eye sees and the heart desires,” and instead of the mind ruling over the heart so that the heart does the mind’s bidding, the heart rules over the mind – using the intellect to fulfill its desires. Though it begins with small things, it can lead to severe sins; when a person ends up lost in the depths of the forest, it starts with only a slight deviation from the right path. Thus, the solution for such a person is not to correct their external behavior or give them more external knowledge, but rather to reach the inner core of their soul (the inner intellect) – by telling them the truth: that they possess an “actual portion of Hashem from Above,” and they have the ability to behave properly and connect with Hashem Above. Only in this way can their intellect be redeemed from its exile within the desires of the heart. This is the idea of the mitzvah of Tefillin – to bind the heart and mind with the strap of holiness. Only in this way can one be turned into a baal teshuvah.
