מובא בפרש"י [בראשון דפ' חוקת] "למה נסמכה מיתת מרים לפרשת פרה אדומה, לומר לך מה פרה אדומה מכפרת אף מיתת צדיקים מכפרת". 1) דמיון הכפרה שע"י מיתת צדיקים לכפרה של פרה אדומה ולא של קרבנות סתם, כי פרה אדומה מכפרת גם על ענינים שסתם קרבנות לא מכפרות (טומאת מת) ועד"ז מיתת צדיקים (וכמו שהכפרה שע"י קרבנות קשורה עם תשובה "שב מידיעתו", עד"ז בכפרה שע"י מיתת צדיקים). 2) מזה שמיתת מרים דוקא נסמכה לפרה אדומה מובן שגם בנוגע שאר הצדיקים יש למצוא בהם את העבודה המיוחדת שבה הצטיינה מרים: היא היתה מה"מילדות העבריות" שעמדו בראש לשמור על ילדי ישראל שיוולדו ויגדלו כיהודים גם בהיותם בגלות מצרים.

Rashi states [in Sheini of Chukas]: “Why is the passage relating Miriam’s death juxtaposed with the passage of the parah adumah? To teach you that just as sacrifices bring atonement, so the death of tzaddikim secures atonement.” (1) The reason the death of the righteous is compared to the atonement of the parah adumah, and not to korbanos in general, is because like the death of tzaddikim, the parah adumah atones even for impurity from death. (And just as the atonement through korbanos depends on teshuvah, so does the atonement brought about by the death of tzaddikim.) (2) From the fact that it is specifically the death of Miriam that is juxtaposed to the parah adumah, it is understood that regarding other tzaddikim, too, we should find in them the special service in which Miriam excelled: she was one of the “Hebrew midwives” who stood at the head of protecting the Jewish boys and ensuring they would be born and grow up as Jews, and speak like Jews (“Puah”), even in exile in Egypt.
