"אלה מסעי בני ישראל אשר יצאו מארץ מצרים וגו'". כמו בדור שיצא ממצרים, שהיו מ"ב מסעות מיציאת מצרים עד ירדן יריחו, עד"ז ישנו בחיי כאו"א. ועד"ז בעבודת כאו"א בלימוד התורה וקיום המצוות. וכמו שבענין המסעות בפעם הראשונה שרובם היו במדבר הגדול והנורא, הנה כמו"כ הוא בעבודת כאו"א. ולכן צ"ל "ויכתוב משה את מוצאיהם למסעיהם" – שמשה, שענינו הוא תורה, המשכה מלמעלמ"ט, ממשיך (מבחי' חקיקה לבחי' כתיבה) את בחי' "מוצאיהם" – המוצא והמקור דישראל, עצם הנשמה, לנשמות בגופים כפי שנמצאים במדבר העמים, שעי"ז יהי' להם הכח לעבור את המ"ב מסעות במדבר וכו'. אבל התכלית היא שתהי' ההעלאה מלמטלמ"ע. וזהו מה שמסיים "ואלה מסעיהם למוצאיהם", שע"י המסעות נתעלו עד לבחי' "מוצאיהם", ולמעלה יותר מה"מוצאיהם" שלפנ"ז שהרי "ירידה צורך עלי'". והעלי' היא ע"י עבודת התפילה. וזהו "אלה מסעי" לשון רבים, שגם לאחרי שיצאו מהמיצרים וגבולים דמסע הראשון, "ארץ מצרים", צריך להמשיך ולעלות מחיל אל חיל, עד שבאים לעבר הירדן וכו'.

“These are the journeys of the Jewish people who left the land of Egypt, etc.” Just like in the generation that left Egypt there were forty-two journeys until they came to the Yarden at Yericho, so too in the life of every individual, and so too in every individual’s service of Torah and mitzvos. Just as the majority of the journeys took place in the “great and fearful desert,” so it is with everyone’s Divine service; therefore, it is necessary for “Moshe to write the starting points for their journeys” – Moshe’s essence is Torah (which comes from above to below), and he draws down (from the level of “engraving” to the level of “writing”) “their starting points” – the source and origin of every Jew, i.e., the essence of the soul, and brings it down into souls within bodies, as they stand in the “desert of the nations.” This gives them the strength to pass through the forty-two journeys in the desert, etc. But the ultimate purpose is the subsequent elevation from below to above, as the verse concludes, “and these were their journeys with their starting points”: as a result of the journeys, they are elevated to the level of “their starting points” and even higher than that, because the descent is for the sake of ascent. This ascent is achieved through the service of tefilah. This is why it says “these are the journeys” in the plural, because even after leaving constraints and limitations of the first journey from “the land of Egypt,” it’s necessary to continue to rise from strength to strength until reaching the other side of the Yarden etc.
