Z and Keith Watched A Movie

This week we bring you a film that maybe more influential that most realize. 1998's Dark City is an ambitious film with many strengths and a few weaknesses. Over all a must watch for the cinema buff.
Plus we give our rankings for the month.

As always, thanks for being here!

We are practically bursting at the cranium to bring this week's episode!
Is Scanners (1981) about the collusion of the corporate and military sectors? The mainstreaming of MK-ULTRA? The success of counterinsurgent efforts within Western empire after the uprisings of the 60's & 70's? Cronenberg's complicated relationship to the Canadian Film Development Corporation? If so, it's probably by accident since he had to write it as they were shooting.

Local pod maestro and known horse sympathizer, Sven joins us once again, this time to talk this wacky time travel romp. Starring the unlikely leads Kris Kristofferson and Cheryl Ladd, Millennium (1989) makes some questionable choices, but we commend its commitment to them.
Plus we reluctantly talk about Star Trek.

Not to be confused with the straight-to-video franchise that began in 1989 (Puppet Master), this film is based on a novel by Robert Heinlein. Starting out as anti-communist cold war propaganda (as Heinlein was want to do), by the time it makes its way to the mid 90's big screen, it's little more than a rehash of the previous 40 years of alien invasion tropes.
But it had its moments.

We are pleased to be able to talk to you about this little gem staring our boy "the doc" Martin "M.D." Donovan and John "Papa Slaughter" McKay: THE Hartley alumni.
Anachronistic technology, theocracy and Wester gothic literature are all part of this murder mystery. Comparisons to Brazil (1985) are obvious but unfortunate.
Plus we wrap on the month's offerings.

This week we are pleased to bring you a film that was a major motivator for starting this here 'cast: Color of Night (1994).
A movie that almost killed the director, arguably nearly ruined the career of one of its stars, with a supporting cast way above and beyond any right it has to have, terrific cinematography and a ridiculous premise-- let's just say it has "the sauce".
Z knew from a young age that this film would be life-changing...

Meanwhile, I won't let you forget about G@za:

The director of Das Boot brings us this psychosexual thriller which is a bit goofy, tighter than it seems and is only passable because of Bob Hoskins.

This week's selection is the first this month to be pulled from our lockdown rewatch bag. A titillating combo of pseudoscience and nudity Sensation holds the rare distinction that it was released on cable before it went to theatres. Wow!

TW: Turns out this movie has a character that weaponizes the accusation of sexual assault.
And we spend a fair amount of the episode talking about that as a trope.
