It is 5:45 in the morning.

The sky is cloudy, but it is not raining.

When I listen carefully, I can hear the sound of bell crickets outside.

Summer is still here, but their voices make me feel that autumn is slowly getting closer.

This morning, I am once again looking at my two bonsai:

Asahiyama Sakura and Serissa.

Yesterday, because of the strong rain and wind from the typhoon, I moved both bonsai from the balcony into the house for safety.

I also gave them some water.

Their branches and moss balls still look weak, and I don’t know what will happen to them from here.

But today, I look at them again.

I gave them water.

July 2026.

The rainy season ended in Tokyo, and the real summer heat began.

Even in the early morning, the air became warm and humid. Cicadas filled the neighborhood with their voices, while the gentle sound of wind chimes became part of everyday summer life in Japan.

Throughout July, I continued to spend time every day with my two bonsai: Asahiyama Sakura and Serissa.

The Asahiyama Sakura entered summer without blooming this year.

As the temperatures rose, both bonsai began to show signs of stress. Their leaves and moss balls became increasingly dry.

On July 20, I removed something that looked like mold from the moss.

By the end of the month, both bonsai looked weaker, and their condition became more worrying.

Still, I continued.

I looked at them every morning.

If they were dry, I gave them water.

I watched for even the smallest changes.

July became a month of repeating these simple actions.

At the same time, the bonsai gave me a reason to reflect on many Japanese Zen expressions:

Heavy rain is falling this morning as a typhoon affects Tokyo.

With the rain and wind getting stronger, I decided to bring both of them inside.
