As Motown has become synonymous with soul, many people associate salsa with Fania Records. With artists such as Hector Lavoe, Willie Colon, Celia Cruz and Ruben Blades, the New York record label put out such a huge volume of seminal salsa albums that many people ignore the other artists and labels that were putting out great salsa in the same period. For this mix we wanted to feature some of those other labels and artists from New York and Puerto Rico. We enlisted the help of Lo_fi_vinyl-- Lemuel, born in Puerto Rico, has been collecting vinyl for decades, including an enviable salsa collection. He featured some of the lesser known or ignored labels, artists and albums. dj tres dos selected some rarities and some artists who didn’t record on Fania but who any serious salsa fan knows and loves.
