Zooming with Zarni

Listen Later

Zarni, an international human rights activist, academic, educator, organizer and advisor originally from Burma. Zarni spent time in Madison and made many friends while getting his Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin. Since then he has traveled the world and become known for his organizing, education and advising skills as well as his commitment to justice and peace.
Gil Halsted and Amitabh Pal interviewed Zarni to get some idea of the current situation in Myanmar. Zarni spoke of the recent high level conference at the United Nations to discuss the Rohingya Muslims and other ethnic and religious minorities in Myanmar. He also talked about the situation in Myanmar and Rakhine, the ancestral home of the Rohingya, and the triangular conflict with the Rohingya who are mostly Muslim but also Buddhist and Christian, the Central Myanmar Buddhists and then the Rakhine Buddhists and their Arakan army that has taken over 90% of the territory.
Zarni finished by talking about the connection of many formerly colonized people and his distaste for former colonizers hypocritically posing as saviors and donors while continuing their inappropriate investments and search for profits from what they can extract from what should now be sovereign nations.
