A new 14.2 billion dollar revenue source for southern Nevada? Cashman Center might soon be home to drones.

My guest on the show today is Zachary Conine, principal at Joseph Beare & Company.  He and the team at UARRC consisting of: Brandon Wiegand, Curt Carlson, Sallie Doebler and Michael Russell, put together the winning proposal  put forward by Strong Cities Strong Communities Initiative  to capture for southern Nevada a portion of the growing Robotics and UAS (Unmanned Aerial Systems) industry.  This  global industry is projected to total $112 billion dollars in 2016 alone.

The UARRC concept is to provide an innovative, highly focused incubator space targeting small and medium size startup companies within the robotics and UAS industry respectively.  Part of the concept is to be able to provide support and subject matter expertise in a variety of areas for member companies ranging from drafting a viable business plan to high level robotics and UAS expertise and almost everything in between.

The UARRC proposal, in collaboration with the city of Las Vegas, is to repurpose and convert an underutilized city real estate asset, the Cashman Center , into an incubator and manufacturing space.  The goal is to  significantly bring down  the barriers of entry to this large and growing market for member companies.

The building offers nearly 100,000 square feet of space for use.

From Microsoft to Amazon,  Michael shares his experience.

Ryan Kuder

Managing Director,Qualcomm Robotics Accelerator, powered by Techstars 

We met Ryan Kuder during CES week in Las Vegas in January 2015. Kuder conducted a presentation and panel discussion at the coworking space Work In Progress on the upcoming Robotics Accelerator. Kuder’s background in start-ups and entrepreneurship combined with his witty candor inspired and motivated the audience.

Ryan Kuder’s “career” as an entrepreneur started at a young age. In his words: “I started my first business when I was in fourth grade. Our teacher gave out points for good behavior. We’d track these points on little pieces of paper and when you got enough points, you’d get extra recess or lunch at Burger King or something. The problem with the paper point sheets was that they weren’t awesome. So I made wipe off point sheets decorated with awesome things like footballs and pirates and sold them to other kids in exchange for points. I got a lot of extra recess that year.”

Techstars hired Kuder in December 2014 to direct the Robotics Accelerator. Kuder explains this exciting opportunity in his own words:

Back in 2009, I was part of a team that won a coding competition called the Rails Rumble. Our prize was a No Expenses Paid trip to Boulder, Colorado to meet David Cohen and the Techstars mentors and spend a week working on our project at the Techstars Bunker, which at that time was in a basement under a shoe store. The mentors and companies working in that space were among the most creative and driven I’d ever met. They did more faster than any startups I’d ever seen.

Throughout my career, I’ve been a founder of a handful of tech startups, been through a couple of exits and more than a couple of failures. I’ve seen just about every phase of the startup stack from two guys working in my living room to multi hundred million dollar exits. Along the way, I’ve learned a lot about starting up, and I’ve spent a lot of time working with founders helping them see the things I’ve already seen.

So a few months ago, when Techstars approached me with the opportunity to build an accelerator to help founders (whoo!) in my home town of San Diego (rad!) partnered with San Diego’s biggest company and industry innovator Qualcomm (wow!) to help robotics startups (ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!) it didn’t take much to convince me.

I’m humbled to join the Techstars team and work with Qualcomm to build the Qualcomm Robotics Accelerator powered by Techstars. The revolution in robotics is just getting started and by bringing together Techstars’ great history of helping founders build great companies and Qualcomm’s tradition of innovation and invention, we’re excited to be building the future of robotics right here in San Diego. Mastering The Work of The Startup World.

After meeting Mark Bowles at Work in Progress in downtown Las Vegas we knew that we needed to feature him on the show. His leadership and drive for excellence in innovation make him an inspiration to anyone in the business realm. Not only is Mark a board member at Edico Genome, he is also a mentor at the TechStars/Qualcomm Robotics Accelerator program. Working with the next generation of entrepreneurs to build better machines and businesses is what ignites Mark’s passion and he is more than qualified for the role.

Mark has more than 25 years in the semiconductor, wireless, and kiosk industries. He has been involved in the formation and funding of 6 technology start-ups and has successfully raised 17 rounds of Venture Capital financing totaling nearly $250M raised and has been part of some very nice financial exits for these investors.

Prior to ecoATM, Mark was with Vativ (sold to Entropic) as VP Mktg & Bus. Dev. Mr. Bowles co-founded Staccato in 2002 and was VP Mktg & Bus. Dev. Prior to Staccato he was co-founder, President, COO and director of BOPS, Inc (sold to Altera), a broadband DSP cores and tools company. Prior to BOPS, he was instrumental in forming and funding a number of successful start-ups including Power Computing (sold to Apple in 1996); Panorama Designs (sold to Motorola in 1996); and BlueSteel Networks (sold to Broadcom in 2000). Mr. Bowles also spent six years at Motorola Semiconductor where he held various distribution management, sales and market development positions; he left in 1996 as vice president MSPI, and PowerPC market development. He has 7 patents granted in kiosk technology, 22 pending in kiosk technology, and 1 pending in wireless authentication.

Mark has been an invited speaker and guest lecturer on entrepreneurism and innovation at Duke, Stanford, UCSD, USD, Pepperdine, Wharton and Harvard. Mark is a board member of Pepperdine’s business school and USD’s Center for Peace and Commerce.

Mark holds an undergraduate degree in Industrial Distribution from Texas A&M, and a Master of Science in Technology Management (eMBA) from Pepperdine University.
