It's our 100th episode, but we don't like to talk about it. Nevertheless, such landmarks deserve to be, erm, marked. There was only one subject in the running to bring up the Football Fives Podcast century, and it's one of our bafflingly popular five-a-side selections. With apologies to Ryan Keaney, whose irritation at the rest of us rarely shows in these 65 minutes, it was always going to be England. Ryan's joined by Daniel Storey, David Hartrick and Chris Nee to construct our all-time favourite English five-a-side Frankenstein team. Because it's Football Fives, you see. The rules are simple: each of us picks a team - in this case it's a goalkeeper, a defender, two midfielders and a striker - and argue the toss over who makes the final team. 100 episodes in, we'd like to thank you for listening to our podcast. The football podosphere is a place of significant interest right now, with some genuine media titans joining the community and some smaller fish trying to make a buck or two. For us, Football Fives is just the motivation to spend a quality hour talking football with our mates. That you listen is an honour. With both our 100th episode and the beginning of the Premier League season right around the corner - and competitive football having already returned in the Football League, non-league, France and plenty of other places besides - you'd have been forgiven for thinking the Football Fives Podcast would focus on the sport itself. Nah. This week we're talking transfers, and more specifically five of the biggest transfers of the summer. Chris stood the rest of the panel up to go to a match, so it's left to Daniel Storey, David Hartrick and Ryan Keaney to debate whether the players, the buying clubs or the selling clubs got or will get the best of the deals. The five moves in the spotlight are Wayne Rooney to Everton, Alex Lacazette to Arsenal, Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United, and Kyle Walker to Manchester City. We also discuss Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid, even though it's not necessarily guaranteed to happen. The episode was recorded before Neymar's move was confirmed. This week's Football Fives Podcast is a 'blind' episode, in which Daniel Storey hits David Hartrick, Ryan Keaney and Chris Nee with five questions related in some way to a previously unannounced subject. That subject, as our intrepid trio discovered after recording had begun, is the footballing summer. Because, you know, it's happening right now and that. Dan's testing teasers take us on a tour of the team's favourite football summers from history, as well as asking us to reveal how we cram football into the close season, which bits of transfer business we really rather fancy, and plenty more besides. So, while the football universe prepares to shift back up the gears, we're taking a step back to assess the past and present of the year's weakest season. God damn you, summer. Give us our football back. The FIFA Confederations Cup sometimes passes without notice, but not this year. The use of the Video Assistant Referee system put the competition in the spotlight, and all ITV could talk about was the use of the newly introduced technology. In all fairness, it gave them plenty to talk about, and controversy wasn't hard to come by. The trial, and VAR in general, led us to this week's Football Fives Podcast topic: technology in football. Daniel Storey, David Hartrick, Ryan Keaney and Chris Nee kick off with a question about VAR but widen the subject to cover goal-line technology as well, before heading off in a whole different direction. We ask whether player performance data should be tracked and published, and whether our football clubs are right, wrong or otherwise to use our data as supporters to target us for all manner of gubbins. Finally, we each reveal our favourite technological development in the history of association football. There are many ways to skin a podcast. You can chuck five questions at a panel and try and squeeze a conversation out of it. You can set the challenge of picking a five-a-side team from a particular nation and argue over the final quintet. You can even go in blind and really test the participants. Surprisingly, these options are routinely eschewed by inferior football podcasts to ours. So is this week's format. It's with mixed feelings and some trepidation that we bring you another Football Fives Pub Quiz. Some of you like them and some of us hate them, but sometimes you've got to give the punters what they inexplicably want. Playing the Dale Winton role this time round is Chris Nee, who's devised five cunning and challenging rounds of football trivia to drive Daniel Storey, David Hartrick and Ryan Keaney to despair. There are lots of questions for you to join in with, lots of points up for grabs, but only one winner. Give or take a week, we're now a year away from the start of FIFA World Cup 2018 in Russia. The awarding of the tournament to Russia was controversial and developments since - not least with regard to hooliganism, homophobia and workers' rights - have done nothing to calm the dissent. Excitement, however, might do just that. In this week's Football Fives Podcast we're looking forward to the next World Cup. Daniel Storey, David Hartrick, Ryan Keaney and Chris Nee join forces once more to tackle five questions about Russia 2018, beginning with whether the simple fact that it'll take place under a cloud will affect its popularity. We talk about English and Northern Irish expectations (sorry Scotland and Ireland; it's just because that's where we're from) and ask whether failure to qualify would take the sheen off a fabulous UEFA EURO 2016 for our Welsh neighbours. We each talk up a young player, predict the four semi-finalists, and allow our mouths to write cheques that our arses can't cash. With the 2016/17 season grinding to a halt, the Football Fives Podcast faces a challenge to keep pressing on regardless. That begins next week. For now, we've got five questions to tackle that are related loosely or otherwise to the season's conclusion. Three of us have, anyway. Daniel Storey's on holiday. Can you believe it? His absence leaves David Hartrick, Ryan Keaney and Chris Nee to mull over this week's quintet of questions. We pretend to be Huddersfield Town's chairman, Dean Hoyle, as he embarks upon their first top flight pre-season for decades, and we have a guess at whose transfer will be the biggest of the upcoming summer. We reveal our favourite manager/player partnerships and examine whether the England Under-20 team's successful run in the World Cup is an indicator of future glories. And, for the first time in ages, we've included a listener question. Does the abundance of money in the Premier League suggest a future of trades and swaps? There's a football match this weekend. You might have heard about it. To mark the occasion, this week's Football Fives Podcast is all about the UEFA Champions League. Because, you know, it's kind of a big deal. Not big enough to persuade Daniel Storey to show up, but one can't have everything in this world. Dan's absence leaves David Hartrick, Ryan Keaney and Chris Nee to pick up the pieces and tackle five questions about European football's flagship club competition. We talk about how much of this season's tournament we've watched, and examine the reasons why we have and haven't been into it. And we explore BT Sport's role in the Champions League's apparently dented popularity. There's a question about whether five English clubs is a good or bad thing for our enjoyment of next season's Champions League, a theoretical fight between the Group Stage and a straight knockout tournament, and a whistlestop tour of our favourite matches of the Champions League era. Go on, get stuck in. You know you want to. With the season nearing its end but drama thin on the ground, we're back on an Anything Goes kick this week, so as not to ruin any season review #content we might choose to pursue in the next few weeks. We're down to three this week due to Ryan Keaney's absence, but, on the plus side...we're down to three this week due to Ryan Keaney's absence! Daniel Storey, David Hartrick and Chris Nee kick off with a discussion about whether send-offs for legendary players have gone too far, and we talk about what our teams need to achieve over the summer in order to meet their ambitions in 2017/18. We identify some teams, managers and players who've had a quietly very good season, and reveal what we've learned from the last nine months. In the middle of the show this week, we spend some time on the subject of BT Sport's cancellation of the European Football Show. Is it a mistake? Is it just a case of pure numbers? Should it be? Check out all the ins and outs we could think of in this week's Football Fives Podcast. Nobody likes to be deceived. When one is promised a blind episode of the Football Fives Podcast, one expects a blind episode of the Football Fives Podcast. So when Daniel Storey, Ryan Keaney and Chris Nee got themselves psyched up for David Hartrick's unplanned subject this week, the disappointment was palpable when it dematerialised. Instead, Dave decided to put the rest of us through the unexpected torture of a pub quiz. That's right, listeners who inexplicably enjoy our quizzes, it's another one! And it's a bit of a greatest hits quiz too, with popular question formats from the past brought back to test and tax the unwitting contestants. Join us as we wade through such classics as higher or lower and career paths, always with a twist. There's a club question free-for-all to kick things off, and little trapdoors here, there and everywhere. Find out who wins, and count your score as you go to see if you can beat his stupid smug face.
