10Woe is me, my mother, that you bore me, a man of strife and contention to the whole land! I have not lent, nor have I borrowed, yet all of them curse me. 11The Lord said, "Have I not set you free for their good? Have I not pleaded for you before the enemy in the time of trouble and in the time of distress? 12Can one break iron, iron from the north, and bronze? 13"Your wealth and your treasures I will give as spoil, without price, for all your sins, throughout all your territory. 14I will make you serve your enemies in a land that you do not know, for in my anger a fire is kindled that shall burn forever." 15O Lord, you know; remember me and visit me, and take vengeance for me on my persecutors. This passage shows God hears more than our words, reminding us:
1. Being SORRY is not enough.
10For the kind of sorrow God wants us to experience leads us away from sin and results in salvation. There's no regret for that kind of sorrow. But worldly sorrow, which lacks repentance, results in spiritual death.

2. God doesn't accept BLAME SHIFTING. Once you hear the word, you're responsible for DOING the word.
20The person who sins is the one who will die. The child will not be punished for the parent's sins, and the parent will not be punished for the child's sins. 3. SINCERITY is more important than VOCABULARY.
Don't allow pain, discouragement, or disappointment lead you to QUESTION what you KNOW is true about God.

I did not know it was against me they devised schemes, saying, "Let us destroy the tree with its fruit, let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name be remembered no more.20But, 0 Lord of hosts, who judges righteously, who tests the heart and the mind, let me see your vengeance upon them, for to you have I committed my cause. 21 Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the men of Anathoth, who seek your life, and say, "Do not prophesy in the name of the Lord, or you will die by our hand"- 22therefore thus says the Lord of hosts: "Behold, I will punish them. The young men shall die by the sword, their sons and their daughters shall die by famine, 23and none of them shall be left. Don't use RIGHTEOUS anger UNRIGHTEOUSLY. Turn it over to God.
18Do all that you can to live in peace with everyone. 19Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. For the Scriptures say, "I will take revenge; I will pay them back," says the Lord.

Why we're not called to seek revenge:
1. We have hidden BIASES. but God is always JUST.
2. We seek RETRIBUTION but God seeks redemption, RESTORATION, and reconciliation.
21 For God called you to do good, even if it means suffering, just as Christ suffered for you. He is your example, and you must follow in his steps. 22He never sinned, nor ever deceived anyone. 23He did not retaliate when he was insulted, nor threaten revenge when he suffered. He left his case in the hands of God, who always judges fairly.

God's answer to Jeremiah's real complaint: "If you think TIMES are HARD NOW, you haven't seen anything yet!"
Are you willing to accept the possibility that your present situation is as GOOD as it's going to GET in this life?
The Lesson:
Don't LOSE FOCUS by asking questions about the fairness of LIFE or comparing your LIFE to someone else's. Whatever tomorrow brings, good or bad, His grace is sufficient. Do your job!

17Gather up your bundle from the ground, O you who dwell under siege! 18For thus says the Lord: "Behold, I am slinging out the inhabitants of the land at this time, and I will bring distress on them, that they may feel it." 19Woe is me because of my hurt! My wound is grievous. But I said, "Truly this is an affliction, and I must bear it." 20My tent is destroyed, and all my cords are broken; my children have gone from me, and they are not; there is no one to spread my tent again and to set up my curtains. 21For the shepherds are stupid and do not inquire of the Lord; therefore they have not prospered, and all their flock is scattered. 22A voice, a rumor! The Situation:
The Babylonian army is steadily advancing towards Jerusalem and has already overrun smaller towns in the outskirts of Judah.
God laid the blame at the feet of Jerusalem's POLITICAL and SPIRITUAL LEADERS.
9 The wise men shall be put to shame; they shall be dismayed and taken; behold, they have rejected the word of the Lord, so what wisdom is in them? Jeremiah 8:9 (ESV)
Lessons from Jeremiah's prayer for mercy:
1. No one is capable of absolute SELF-DETERMINATION.
2. God orders our steps. PRAYING for someone is the most effective and logical thing you can do to bring about a change!
We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.

When praying for God's mercy for a loved one, ask for God's CORRECTIVE JUSTICE.
It is good for me that I was afflicted, that I might learn your statutes.

As much as you may love a person, God's KINGDOM and His GLORY must always come first.

A Reminder of the Foolishness of Idolatry:

Idols are POWERLESS to save or deliver. Idolatry is foolishness!!
Three common idols in our culture:
• HEALTH
• BUSINESS/ENTREPRENEURSHIP
• SEX
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Why was this warning necessary (and still necessary)?
Because PANIC and ANXIETY make idols more attractive and sensible.
The cure:
Remain enamored by the GRANDEUR, GREATNESS, and GRACIOUSNESS of our God.

Is her King not in her?" "Why have they provoked me to anger with their carved images and with their foreign idols?" 20"The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved." 21For the wound of the daughter of my people is my heart wounded; I mourn, and dismay has taken hold on me. 22Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why then has the health of the daughter of my people not been restored? 1Oh that my head were waters, and my eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people! 2Oh that I had in the desert a travelers' lodging place, that I might leave my people and go away from them! Three perspectives of the catastrophe in Jerusalem -
The people:
"Where's God?
How could He let this happen?"
Is He SOVEREIGN?
Is He GOOD?
God:
"Why did you make Me do this?"
God's purpose has always been to produce holiness and faithfulness in His people, whether it comes through PEACE or ADVERSITY.
But because of UNREPENTANT SIN, painful discipline may be the only course of action God has left to achieve that result.
6In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 7so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

5And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons? "My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him. 6For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives."

They hold fast to deceit; they refuse to return. 6I have paid attention and listened, but they have not spoken rightly; no man relents of his evil, saying, 'What have I done?' Everyone turns to his own course, like a horse plunging headlong into battle. 7Even the stork in the heavens knows her times, and the turtledove, swallow, and crane keep the time of their coming, but my people know not the rules of the Lord. 8"How can you say, 'We are wise, and the law of the Lord is with us'? Notes:
The people's turning away from God was IRRATIONAL , UNNATURAL, and INTENTIONAL.
Backsliding means TO TURN AWAY FROM.
A true believer can't remain in that condition. It's just UNNATURAL.
6No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. 9No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God's seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God.

There will always be someone willing to tell you the LIE you want to HEAR.
The most effective lies are the ones that convince us WE'RE OKAY and don't need to CHANGE.
30An appalling and horrible thing has happened in the land: 31the prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests rule at their direction; my people love to have it so, but what will you do when the end comes?

If you've been deceived, TURN QUICKLY before you reach the POINT of no RETURN.

And they pour out drink offerings to other gods, to provoke me to anger. 19Is it I whom they provoke? declares the Lord. Why would God tell Jeremiah to stop praying?

A profile of the nation in 7:16-26:

1. Pervasive IDOLATRY. DISOBEDIENCE doesn't hurt God, it hurts you.
Don't make a FOOL of yourself!

12"And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, 13and to keep the commandments and statutes of the Lord, which I am commanding you today for your good?

Conclusion
These PEOPLE were not His PEOPLE.
God had "GIVEN THEM OVER" to the sinful desires of their hearts. Jeremiah's prayers would have been in vain.

1Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit but as people who are still worldly—mere infants in Christ. 2I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready. 3You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans? 4For when one says, "I follow Paul," and another, "I follow Apollos," are you not mere human beings? 5What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe—as the Lord has assigned to each his task. 6I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. 7So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. 8The one who plants and the one who waters have one purpose, and they will each be rewarded according to their own labor. 9For we are co-workers in God's service; you are God's field, God's building. 10By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care.

Notes:
1. Paul considered this group Christians.
Paul is addressing CHRISTIANS thinking and acting like CHILDREN.

Choosing one MINISTER over the other is a sign of an immature Christian.

Recognizing people sent by God requires spiritual discernment.

Spiritual discernment is the ability to tell the difference between truth and error.

2. All of God's servants are EQUAL.
We have DIFFERENT GIFTS but the same GOAL. (expanding the Kingdom)

God is responsible for the RESULTS and He gets the GLORY.

Everyone that GOD sends to you is for your benefit
Kingdom Life is growing and God is using new people in every ministry.

If you can have an open mind about God using different people; you can have an open mind about God using you.

1The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 2"Stand in the gate of the Lord's house, and proclaim there this word, and say, Hear the word of the Lord, all you men of Judah who enter these gates to worship the Lord. 3Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Amend your ways and your deeds, and I will let you dwell in this place. 4Do not trust in these deceptive words: 'This is the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord.' 5"For if you truly amend your ways and your deeds, if you truly execute justice one with another, 6if you do not oppress the sojourner, the fatherless, or the widow, or shed innocent blood in this place, and if you do not go after other gods to your own harm, 7then I will let you dwell in this place, in the land that I gave of old to your fathers forever. 8"Behold, you trust in deceptive words to no avail. 9Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, make offerings to Baal, and go after other gods that you have not known, 10and then come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, 'We are delivered!'—only to go on doing all these abominations? 11Has this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? The Lie (7:4, 8): "God will never let Jerusalem fall because the temple is here. It doesn't matter what WE DO, WE'RE SAFE!"
The Truth: God's grace is never a LICENSE to SIN.
15Well then, since God's grace has set us free from the law, does that mean we can go on sinning? Of course not! 16Don't you realize that you become the slave of whatever you choose to obey? You can be a slave to sin, which leads to death, or you can choose to obey God, which leads to righteous living.
