If community is to be a comfort to the saints, we must joyfully serve one another with the powerful gifts the Holy Spirit has uniquely given to each believing member (I Cor. 12.4-7; Rom. 12.3-6a; I Pet. 4.10-11).
We are a literal family: our Father God sent His Son (John 3.16), our Brother, to die for us (Heb. 2.10-18), making all in our midst who have responded to the gospel brothers and sisters (I John 3.1, 10-18). When individuals who wholeheartedly believe the gospel commit to regular, gathered worship that feasts upon preaching (Acts 2:42a; 1 Tim. 4.13; cf. Neh. 8.2-5, 8), prayer (Acts 1.14; 2.42b), song (Eph. 5.18-19; Col. 3.16), the sacraments (Matt. 28.19; Acts 2.38; I Cor. 11.17-34), and accountability (Gal. 6.1; 2 Thess. 3.14-15; James 5.19-20; Jude 1:22-23), biblical community is realized (I Tim. 4.13; Eph. 5.18c-19; Col. 3.16; Jas. 5.13-16; 1 Cor. 11.17-34; Gal. 6.1; 2 Thess. 3.14-15; James 5.19-20; Jude 1:22-23).
Implication: Under Christ's authority (Eph. 1.22-23; Col. 1.18), our elders will watch over us (I Pet. 5.1-4), and we will watch over and serve one another in a God-glorifying, gospel-transforming manner (John 13.34-35; I John 3.16). We commit to more than just Sunday mornings to make true biblical community a reality (Acts 2.42-47; Heb. 3.13; 10.23-25).
In order to accomplish the mission Jesus gave His church (Matt. 28.19-20; Jn. 20.21; Acts 1.8b), we must be empowered by the Holy Spirit (John 20.22; Acts 1.8a), who is the power behind the fruitful proclamation of the gospel (cf. Acts 2.1-13 with Acts 2.14-41; 1 Cor. 2.1-5).
Due to the fact that there are those who do not yet know the wonder and joy of worshiping the triune God, worship is not only the ultimate goal of our existence (cf. John 4.23; Rom. 12.1; Deut. 5.5-7), but it is also the impetus for pursuing lost souls who do not know the unspeakable satisfaction of Christ (Rom. 8.31–9.3; 1 Cor. 9.20-23). Ultimately, the church is to be missional because God is a missional God (John 3.16; Luke 19.10; John 20.21).
Preaching is the God-ordained means through which His glory in the gospel is heard (1 Cor. 1.20-21). Therefore, our local church community will mature corporately (Eph 4.11-16) and grow numerically (Acts 2.40-41) as Jesus Christ is centrally (I Cor. 2.1-5; Col. 1.27b-28) and accurately (2 Tim. 2.15) preached (Rom. 10.17).
Implication: Preaching will be a significant part of our gathered worship, with preachers committed to the skillful and compelling exposition and proclamation of biblical texts (Ezra 7.6b, 10; Matt. 7.28-29) and congregants eager to respond with gospel obedience (Luke 6.46-49; James 1.22-25; 1 John 1.6).
When the gospel is correctly preached (Rom. 1.16-11.36), the proper response is to worship God with the entirety of our lives (Rom. 12.1ff.). A lifestyle that holistically worships the living God is synonymous with a lifestyle that seeks to constantly glorify God (cf. Rom. 12.1 with 1 Cor. 6.19-20).
Implication: We will lovingly create a culture that promotes this gospel-based, holistic view of worship; musically, we intend to enjoy both the past and present, so long as it reflects God’s glory in the gospel of Jesus Christ, empowering us to fulfill our vision as a community.
