The Seljuks started out as a small band of 100 horsemen, their families, and flocks of sheep and camels. In less than a century, they became the most potent power in the Islamic world. Initially, the Seljuks fought with the Khazar Khaganate against the spreading Ummayad Caliphate, and not long after, they ruled over the Caliphate.
