This week at In The Past Lane, the history podcast, I speak with Patricia Nelson Limerick about her iconic book, The Legacy of Conquest: The Unbroken Past of the American West. When it was first published 30 yrs ago in 1987, it sent shock waves among historians whose work focused on the American west. It challenged the traditional, heroic version of western history and called for a more complicated history that included marginalized groups like women and immigrants, and issues like racism and dispossession.
