We don’t talk enough about childhood mental illnesses, and so that’s why this episode is dedicated to just that. There was a study published in the January 2022 issue of Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Clinics of North America, and the study found that, overall, 21.8 percent of U.S. children ages 3 to 17 have one or more of the common mental, emotional, and behavioral health conditions assessed. The prevalence of mental health problems across U.S. children ranged from about 15 to 60 percent, increasing with the type (social, relational, or both) and number of these risks that children had been exposed to. And of course, schools are NOT always fully equipped to deal with them.
This is why it’s so important for parents and caregivers to take charge of their child’s care and know how to best support them in the process. You are your child’s best advocate. Our special guest, School Psychologist Martin Barriga, shares more about the top 5 common childhood mental illnesses and how parents and caregivers can help children manage their symptoms.
