In this final episode of the Parent Them Successful Podcast, I wanted to leave you with a reminder about your parent rights. Knowing your parent rights is crucial as you advocate for the best quality education possible in your child’s educational journey. You are truly their best advocate. Use your parent rights as a guide to help you hold schools accountable for providing your child with the education that they are supposed to receive. In this episode, I leave you with my final thoughts as I close out my podcasting journey. I discuss parent rights for children on IEP’s, 504 Plans, and for those not in a particular program (General Education). So, tune in until the end to hear my insights on what you need to hold fast to while you help your child thrive.

In this episode of the Parent Them Successful Podcast, we uncover what to look for if you believe your child has an undetected hearing defect. In the IEP world, hearing defects, or as IDEA calls it, possible “Hard of Hearing” eligibility, is considered a low-incidence eligibility category. That means that this eligibility category is somewhat rare and special funding is set aside for these students to access equipment and other tools they may need to access the general curriculum. So, if you suspect your child is suffering from a hearing defect, I will share what to look for, misbehaviors that are often misdiagnosed, and treatment options. So, tune in until the end to learn more about what you need to know.

In this episode, I did something a little different. Have you ever looked at your own parenting style and compared it to how you were parented growing up? Maybe you have certain traditions or sayings that your parents used when parenting you or perhaps it’s how you nurture your child’s talents. Sometimes we also may notice some of the things our parents did that we may not want to carry on in our own parenting journey and that’s perfectly fine, too. If you are co-parenting, you must take on a style that joins both of your backgrounds together. If you are single parenting, you may have to make adjustments based on your particular circumstance using whatever support system you have. Well, growing up in a single-parent home allowed me to see many of the sacrifices my mother had to make but the way she parented me also made me the person I am today. So, I interviewed my mother, Linda Sagoe, in this episode to impart her wisdom to all of us.

In this episode, we talk about procrastination. Has your child ever come to you the night before a project is due or an event is scheduled only to tell you that they need supplies before tomorrow? So in your anger and haste, you run to the store to get them everything they need at the last minute. Or maybe your child simply starts getting ready for school or camp 10 minutes before it’s time to leave only to have you running late AGAIN!!! If it’s any consolation, you’re not alone. I’ve experienced this too, and it is so frustrating. That’s why I share practical strategies you can use to help your child overcome procrastination.

In this episode, we discuss intergenerational trauma. This inherited trauma can make deep imprints on your overall well-being. The trauma responses you experience today can sometimes be rooted in past experiences you may not have been present for originally. Maybe you weren’t abused growing up, but your parents or grandparents were. Maybe you didn’t face discrimination or live through a war, but your great-grandparents did. Factors such as these can have negative effects on familial relationships and impact how your children navigate life. Our expert guest educates us about intergenerational trauma while sharing his personal story of trial and triumph within his relationship with his father.

Did you know that about 11.6% of kids had anxiety in 2012, up 20% from 2007? But during the pandemic, those numbers nearly doubled, such that 20.5% of youth worldwide now struggle with anxiety symptoms, as reported by the American Psychological Association. So if your child is in that number, they are not alone. I often get asked what causes my child’s anxiety? It could be a number of factors such as any unexpected change or instability, loss, serious illness, death of a loved one, violence, or abuse. Of course these are just a few situations that can lead some kids to become anxious. Sometimes it could simply be learned behavior. Growing up in a family where others are fearful or anxious also can "teach" a child to be afraid too. But interventions can help them overcome, especially in the form of stories. That’s why , I share my top 12 children’s books that help children manage worry and anxiety. (This is not an exhaustive list but a great resource to get you started.) So, tune in until the end to hear more about what these books have to offer.
