If college degree providers are the goal why do leaders and organizations in EMS continue to accept and promote non degree programs and employees? Does it boil down to dollars and cents or is it that there just isn’t enough providers who pursue the degree path?

As EMS professionals we sometimes find ourselves in a position to act while off duty.

For this Office Hours Greg and Jim talked a little about doing just that. You never know when someone may call out “Is there a doctor in the house?”. You would probably be surprised that they would prefer an EMT anyway.

This week on the podcast Jim and Josh talk about a few EMS topics including active shooter training. The topic of having a degree in EMS, higher pay and the pie in the sky wishing of it all came up.

The idea that a college degree trumps your five, ten or more years of experience and how that is going to bring EMS from making $12, $13 or $14 dollars an hour to a pay scale matching the job we do with or without a degree is as always a hot topic.

Sure you won’t get rich in EMS and you shouldn’t expect too. But you should expect to pay your bills as much as you are expected to undergo continuous education, skills assessments, new equipment training, new drugs and protocols. All in the name of superior patient care and competent providers. But no so competent that we can tell people they don’t need an ambulance based on our assessments. Fair?

Heck EMT’s are being expected to perform 12 leads, give drugs, use advanced airways and that list is growing. Yet they have not earned a cent more an hour and most are making at or below minimum wage. Fair?

It all started with a discussion on geriatric patients and being a good customer service EMS provider.

During this episode Ted Setla stopped in with info on the Feb 12th premiere of The Chronicles of EMS as well. This was back in 2010 but very worth watching even today.

We all have to check the ambulance at the beginning of our shifts. Yes tedious, yes at times it makes you think why you have to look for the ring cutter or occlusive dressing every time. As if someone is moving them around each day playing a little game of EMS Concentration.
