  • Anatomy of a Mixtape
As a precursor for the Quarantine Mixtape mini-series Glen and I discuss the art of making a mixtape and the choices between song placement, etc.

We also bring up and delve into Columbia House Music Club (it was around in the 90s) where one could order 10 cassettes for 1 penny and then have to purchase 5 more at an inflated 'regular' price...it was a great way to expand your collection.

We also bring up the chipmunks sounding 'high speed dubbing', trying to tape songs off the radio, top loading cassette recording devices and how the mixtape resurfaced in pop culture with Guardians of the Galaxy.

    Great episode! Lots of fun.

  • In the Studio : The Tragically Hip - 'World Container'
I would like to introduce Erik Armstrong to the podcast series.

He has been living in Vancouver since he turned 19 and has managed to maintain a career in music ever since (he is an Audio Engineer and a Live Sound Tech).

In late 2005 Erik was employed at The Warehouse - Bryan Adams' recording studio - as an Assistant Engineer...much to his delight Canada's most famous band, The Tragically Hip, entered the studio to record their 10th studio album "World Container".

Erik shares his stories about his 6 weeks working closely with The Hip and producer Bob Rock...stories such as getting a drum lesson from Johnny Fay on the very drum kit Fay used on "Fully Completely"...Downie bouncing last-minute lyric changes off him...the band setting up and settling in to the studio and starting into 'Wheat Kings' as Erik walked around the room running cables...Erik even got offered a job to go back to the Hip's home studio 'The Bath House'.

There are some hilarious stories about how Canadian and down(ie) to earth the band is, as Erik remembers this experience!

October 17th, 2006 was the release date for this album....who would think that 11 years later the same calendar day would share Gordon Downie's last day on Earth.

    Great podcast - enjoy!!

  • Matt #10pick : Red Hot Chili Peppers - 'Californiacation'
PART 3 of our "10th EPISODE SPECTACULAR" !!

Matt chooses 1999's 'Californiacation'. For him it was his grad year (it was released in June, the grad month) and incites memories of his first car - a 1989 Ford Escort - where he played this album on cassette often.

There is an attachment and bond he has with this album with a late friend of his, as well, who together did their best Frusciante/Flea impression in their first Edmonton band (Whatbox).

Frusciante's comeback story is amazing leading up to this album. His guitar style and even vocal and songwriting style had a enormous impact on Matt.

    ****

Matt grew up on Bon Jovi, Aerosmith and Cinderella before graduating to AC/DC, Nirvana and Pearl Jam..as well as all the 60s and 70s rock bands that his father passed onto him. As time has passed Rage Against the Machine , Queens of the Stone Age and Tool reigned supreme. Favourite all time artist, however? Neil Young.

  • Darci's #10pick : The Black Keys - 'Chulahoma'
It was a tough choice as Darci is an avid fan of The Black Keys...but this sleeper of their discography is *that* album for her.

It was truly the soundtrack to her finding herself : coming out of a break-up, getting a place of her own for the first time in her life..this album was the soundtrack to coming into her own.

It is an eerie, bluesy number - we revealed this album is actually a "cover" album - the band is paying tribute to blues artist and TBK influencer David "Junior" Kimbrough.

    ***

Darci brings the female perspective and is in that 'millenial' age group that grew up in the ashes of Grunge, into the boy and girl bands, into EDM and Hip Hop. Also - she grew up with a rocker dad.

  • Glen's #10pick : Soundgarden - 'Badmotorfinger'
Glens #10pick is also his #1 Grunge-era album.

Front to back this album has always spoke to him; and it still holds up today.

We have taken a few playful jabs at Chris Cornell when he performs live, but its all in jest. Cornell is the man. This album was a monster and, unfortunately, gets a bit lost in the shuffle....for very good reason : this album was released within weeks of Nirvana's 'Nevermind' and Pearl Jam's 'Ten'.

Over time this album has created its own legacy and very much stands on its own as a top album of a very important era.

Glen is the clan-elder of the 10Albums group - with heavy metal leanings that collide with a surprisingly tender pop sensibility.

    #10albums - Episode 9

    Welcome to #10albums!

My name is Matt and my co-hosts Darci and Glen join me as we unravel/reveal our 10 Life Defining Albums!!

Glen is the clan elder and has metal tastes with surprisingly tender pop sensibilities ...

Darci brings the female perspective and is in that 'millenial' age group that grew up in the ashes of Grunge, into the boy and girl bands, into EDM and Hip Hop. Also - she grew up with a rocker dad.

I am in between Glen and Darci's ages and definitely grew up with 90s grunge, as well as being heavily influenced by my dads 70s rock. I am the musician of the group, as well.

The basics of this series is : In no particular sequence Glen, Darci and Matt each reveal our 10 most influential albums, as what would make up the "soundtracks" to our lives...albums that are so intertwined with crucial times in our growing older; we share the stories as to the why, where, how.

As we reveal our own lists , we will be introducing new people, with different tastes and the stories behind their choices - those stories are the backbone of the show.

The stories behind the album picks are those goosebump inducing recollections that truly affirm all that's exciting about life.

    #10albums - Episode 7

We are back and ALL parties are in studio as the grounds around us begin to thaw...for today, at least.

    Picks-wise :
Glen goes back to his metal heritage and picks a ouija-board influenced, Tipper Gore favourite from the 90s!

Darci has a tough pick but brings the first Tragically Hip album to the series..which one does she inject??

Matt piggybacks an earlier pick from the series and brings another prolific Canadian artist to the episode.
