STORY 1:  Cellphone Ban in Georgia Public Schools Closer to Becoming law 

Georgia's House Bill 340, which bans cellphones in public elementary and middle schools, advanced through a Senate committee and awaits a full Senate vote. Proponents argue that smartphones harm student behavior, mental health, and academic performance, while critics question emergency communication and the exclusion of high schools. The bill mandates schools to establish post-emergency communication policies. Rep. Scott Hilton suggested high school bans could follow in the future. Advocates, including ExcelinEd, highlight improved mental health and academics in states with similar bans. The bill passed the committee 4-1 and moves to the Senate Rules Committee. 

STORY 2:  Cherokee County Students Place at State Tech Competition 

Six Cherokee County School District students earned statewide recognition at the Georgia Student Technology Competition. The contest, open to grades 3-12, showcases projects in categories like mobile apps, robotics, and video production. Thirty-eight CCSD students advanced to state after winning regionals. State winners include Micah Currie (Productivity Design), Jackson Davis and Bella Higgins (Animation), and James Moody (Digital Photo Production), all earning second place. Zephyr Johnson (Device Modification) and Jack Mizelle (Project Programming) secured third place. 

STORY 3:  Trader Joe's Could be Coming to Adair Park in Woodstock 

Adair Park developer Eric Richards is seeking to expand the Woodstock development with a mixed-use project that could include a Trader Joe's. Richards has applied for permits to build single-family homes, townhomes, and a multi-family building with retail space, including a grocery store. Plans also propose extending Short Street and creating a pedestrian-friendly road connecting Main Street and Rope Mill Road. The project, which may require $9 million in city funding for infrastructure, is under review by Woodstock's Planning Commission and City Council in April. Richards aims to complete the development by 2030.

STORY 4:   Site Work Set to Begin on Property for New CATS Building 

Cherokee County is set to begin site work for a new Cherokee Area Transit Service (CATS) Administration Building at Univeter and Pinecrest Roads near Canton. The Board of Commissioners approved an $849,000 construction services agreement with Place Services, Inc., plus an $85,000 contingency. This phase includes clearing, earthwork, and stormwater system installation, with clearing expected to start by month's end. The building is still in design, with construction contracts anticipated by summer and completion expected within a year. Funded 80% by a federal grant and 20% by local sales tax, the facility will address current space shortages and support CATS' growth for 20+ years. 

 

STORY 5: Tort Reform Passes Another Hurdle in Georgia General Assembly 

Gov. Brian Kemp's priority tort reform bill, Senate Bill 68, advanced through a Georgia House committee after extensive hearings. The bill aims to curb high jury awards impacting businesses by introducing measures like premises liability guidelines, seat belt evidence in auto cases, and limiting medical damage claims to actual costs. Concerns about its impact on sex trafficking victims led to amendments allowing exceptions for these cases, avoiding retraumatization in court. While some lawmakers pushed for broader protections for other sexual crime victims, the focus remained on trafficking. The bill, already passed by the Senate, may reach the House floor soon.

The Cherokee Sheriff's Office is alerting residents about a scam involving text messages demanding payment for unpaid tolls, with some claiming to be from Peach Pass. Authorities emphasize that toll agencies do not request payments via text and urge residents not to click on any links in these messages.

The Buckle, Inc. is relocating its store from Town Center at Cobb to The Outlet Shoppes at Atlanta in Woodstock, opening April 1. STORY 4:   Bill Would Make Driver’s License on a Smartphone Official for Georgia Police 

Georgia's House Bill 296, which would require police to accept digital driver’s licenses during traffic stops, is advancing through the Senate after passing the House with bipartisan support. The bill aims to modernize identification, allowing drivers to use licenses stored in Apple or Google Wallets, already used by 450,000 Georgians. It excludes use at polling places and bars, addressing election security concerns. Law enforcement agencies must equip officers with devices to validate digital licenses by 2027. Traditional licenses remain valid, and drivers are advised to carry both forms of ID. 

 

STORY 5: Woodstock Looks to Establish Paid Parking Areas Downtown 

Woodstock leaders are moving forward with plans to introduce paid parking zones in downtown, primarily affecting street parking. On March 10, the City Council approved the first reading of an ordinance to establish paid parking, with a final vote set for March 24. Mayor Michael Caldwell emphasized that the city’s parking deck, with 633 spaces, will remain free. The plan aims to improve parking turnover and support local businesses. Proposed zones include 287 spaces out of 1,509 total downtown spaces, with fees capped at $2/hour and a three-hour limit. If approved, implementation is expected by April 15, with public input opportunities beforehand.

STORY 1:   Holly Springs Mulling Decision on Land Bank 

Holly Springs leaders will decide on March 17 whether to join Cherokee County in supporting the creation of the Cherokee Regional Land Bank Authority. The land bank aims to redevelop blighted and delinquent properties for housing and economic development. Cherokee County approved the resolution on February 18, and other cities, including Canton and Woodstock, are discussing participation. Holly Springs tabled its decision on March 3 to allow more time for review. If approved, the resolution would direct staff to collaborate with the county and municipalities on forming the land bank, which would be governed by a board appointed by member jurisdictions. 

STORY 2:  Cherokee County Historic Store Could Be Home to a Coffee Shop 

The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners will hold a public hearing on April 15 to consider a request from We2Friends Coffeehouse to establish a coffeehouse and gift shop in the historic J.B. Mathis General Store building on Union Hill Road. Built in 1950, the building received a Historic Preservation Award last year. The proposed legacy use would allow the business to open without rezoning. Plans include nine parking spaces, one ADA space, and no deceleration lane due to low traffic. The coffeehouse aims to preserve local history while fostering community with locally roasted coffee and gifts. 

STORY 3:  Cherokee Commissioners Approve Appeal for Pet Memorial Garden 

Sweet Dreams, a pet euthanasia service near Woodstock, received approval from the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners on March 4 to build a memorial garden on its property after reaching a compromise with neighbors. The garden, located behind Sweet Dreams’ building on Highway 92, will feature a pond, bridge, shade garden, and flower garden, with no pet burials allowed. Adjusted variances include maintaining a 50-foot buffer in the back and 10-foot buffers on the sides, partial fencing along Highway 92, and planting two overstory trees. The garden is expected to open in 2026, offering a peaceful space for families.

STORY 4:   Comprehensive school-safety bill clears Georgia House 

The Georgia House passed House Bill 268, a school-safety measure inspired by last year’s Barrow County school shooting, in a 159-13 vote. Sponsored by Rep. Holt Persinger, the bill aims to improve communication about at-risk students, create a statewide threat database, and introduce an anonymous tip app. It also funds mental-health counselors in schools and mandates threat-assessment teams with firearm detection technology. Critics raised concerns about student privacy and potential racial bias in surveillance. A separate bill offering tax credits for firearm storage devices also passed. Both measures now head to the Senate for consideration. 

 

STORY 5: GDOT Awards $36.5M Contract to Widen Bells Ferry Road 

The Georgia Department of Transportation has awarded a $36.5 million contract to widen Bells Ferry Road in Cherokee County. The project will add two lanes in each direction, a raised median, and several Reduced Conflict U-Turns (RCUTs) along a 2.4-mile stretch from Southfork Way to Victoria Road. Construction is set to begin in late spring or early summer and is expected to be completed by October 31, 2028. GDOT Engineer Grant Waldrop emphasized the importance of increasing capacity for the heavily traveled road.

STORY 2:  Creekview Student Wins $500 Scholarship in Wiring Contest 

Aaron Dickson of Creekview High School won first place in the Area Wiring Contest hosted by Amicalola EMC in Jasper, earning a $500 scholarship. Karson Wham of Central High School placed second, receiving a $300 scholarship. Sponsored by FFA and Amicalola EMC, the event helps students build skills in electrical wiring, critical thinking, and communication. Both winners will advance to the state finals, competing against other top students from across Georgia for additional scholarships and awards. 

STORY 3:  Here's What's in the Cherokee Greenways and Trails Master Plan 

Cherokee County has adopted a 30-year Greenways and Trails Master Plan to guide future trail development. Approved by the Board of Commissioners, the plan outlines 491 miles of proposed trails, including greenways, side paths, blueways, and mountain bike trails. It features 95 potential projects categorized into short-term, mid-term, long-term, and aspirational phases, with costs ranging from $100-168 million for a base scenario to $248-401 million for an enhanced scenario. Public input shaped the plan, which aims to prioritize trail connections, secure funding, and collaborate with cities and counties. Projects will be approved individually, with regular updates expected over time.

STORY 4:   Cherokee County Students Advance to State Science and Engineering Fair 

Four Cherokee County students are advancing to the Georgia Science and Engineering Fair in April at UGA. E.T. Booth Middle School’s Hudson Gillentine(HUD-suhn GILL-en-tyne) and Rishabh Pandya ( RISH-uhb PAN-dya) earned top honors, with Gillentine receiving the Innovator of the Future award. Woodstock High sophomores Karsyn Gilbreath (CAR-sin GILL-breth) and Yayra Hodasi (YAHY-rah ho-DAH-see) also qualified, winning the Excellence in Community Impact award. Sponsors like Cobb EMC, Gas South, and CCWSA supported the event, awarding prizes to standout students. Additional awards and gift cards were given to students across CCSD for their innovative projects, highlighting the district’s strong commitment to STEM education. 

 

STORY 5: Metro Atlanta Film Summit Announces Lineup 

The first annual Metro Atlanta Film Summit (MAFS) will feature industry leaders, including Eagle Rock Studios' Gideon Amir and Mike Clark, discussing the studio's 10-year impact and Georgia's film future. Another panel, "From Passion to Profit," will guide creatives on turning ideas into reality. The summit offers expert-led sessions on topics like Georgia’s Film Tax Incentive, entertainment tourism, and motion capture technologies. Organized by the Cherokee Office of Economic Development, MAFS builds on the success of the Cherokee Film Summit. STORY 1:   Georgia Supreme Court raises concerns about 2019 child custody law 

The Georgia Supreme Court has raised concerns about the 2019 Equitable Caregiver law, which allows non-parents to seek custody or visitation rights if they demonstrate a parental role and bond with a child. In *Dias v. Boone*, the court reversed a lower court's decision granting Abby Boone equitable caregiver status over Michelle Dias’s child, ruling the law didn’t apply as Boone’s relationship with the child predated the law. While the justices questioned the law’s constitutionality regarding parental rights, they did not strike it down, instead issuing a narrow ruling specific to this case. 

STORY 2:  Man Charged With Murder After Shooting at Cherokee County Home 

A man, David Daniel, 44, has been arrested and charged with murder after Michael Kyle Reid, 42, was found dead from a gunshot wound in a carport on North Lake Drive near Canton on Monday night. Cherokee County homeowners have until April 1 to file for real property tax exemptions for the current year. Available exemptions include the standard homestead exemption, which reduces assessed home values for county and school taxes, and a floating homestead exemption that freezes property values for county taxes. Seniors 62+ with a valid homestead exemption for five years now qualify for a 100% school tax exemption, per Senate Bill 388. STORY 3:  Cherokee County Remembers Pastor and Counselor James Kilgore 

James Kilgore, a beloved pastor, counselor, author, and columnist, passed away on Feb. 7 at 88. Known for his dedication to helping others, Kilgore served as a pastor for over 50 years, founded Lake Arrowhead Church, and counseled families for nearly 40 years. He authored numerous books, including his latest, *Escaping Anxiety*, and contributed columns to the *Cherokee Tribune* for over 30 years. Remembered for his kindness and faith, Kilgore leaves behind his wife of nearly 70 years, Ruth, two children, and a legacy of service. A memorial service will be held on Feb. 15 at Canton First Methodist Church.

STORY 4:   State Senate weighing in on growth of data centers 

Georgia lawmakers are considering a bill to prevent Georgia Power from passing electricity costs for energy-intensive data centers onto residential and small-business customers. Sen. Chuck Hufstetler, the bill’s sponsor, emphasized the need for data centers to pay their fair share due to their significant energy demands, which account for 80% of Georgia Power’s recent capacity increase request. While the Public Service Commission (PSC) has already implemented rules to address this, industry representatives argue the bill unfairly targets data centers. The stolen Nissan Frontier was recovered in Austell by Cobb County Police, who arrested at least one suspect found with stolen credit cards. Cherokee County has not yet filed charges, and the investigation is ongoing.

STORY 4:   Georgia DNR Approves 2025 Round of Land Conservation Grants 

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources has awarded $24.6 million through the Georgia Outdoor Stewardship Program to fund 12 land conservation projects statewide. Funded by a sales tax on sporting goods, the program supports initiatives like the $5 million acquisition of Upatoi Ravines in Talbot County. Other major grants include $3 million each for additions to Phinizy Wildlife Management Area, Paradise Park restoration, and Amicalola Falls renovations. Additional projects include park expansions, trail improvements, and habitat restoration across the state, with funding amounts ranging from $808,500 to $1.9 million.

STORY 2:  Congress clears immigrant detention bill for Trump’s signature on his 3rd day in office 

The U.S. House passed a bill expanding mandatory detention for immigrants charged with petty crimes, sending it to President Trump for approval. The bill, named after Georgia nursing student Laken Riley, passed with bipartisan support, reflecting Trump's immigration crackdown agenda. Critics argue it could lead to mass deportations, as it mandates detention without bond and lacks exceptions for children. The bill also allows state attorneys general to challenge federal immigration policies. Enforcing the law could cost $26.9 billion in its first year, far exceeding ICE's budget. Amendments further broaden detention requirements for assaulting officers and causing serious harm. 

STORY 3:  Cherokee County School District Announces Spelling Bee Champ 

Seventh-grader Leah Childers from Creekland Middle School won the 2025 Cherokee County School District Spelling Bee by correctly spelling "ubiquity" and "debutante." Liberty Elementary's fifth-grader Royd Reyes took second place after a lengthy final round. Teagan Gray from Johnston Elementary and Sebastian Kasarhis from Carmel Elementary placed third and fourth, respectively. These top four spellers will advance to the Region Bee on February 22, with state winners moving on to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in June. The competition featured 30 students and lasted nearly two hours.

STORY 4:   Cherokee County Commissioners Approve 30-Home Subdivision 

The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners approved RAK Developments' plan to build a 30-home neighborhood on 40.26 acres near Canton Exchange shopping center. The land was rezoned from agriculture to single-family residential. RAK will pay $100,000 for improvements to Old Doss Lane, alongside impact fees. The project includes variances for rural street sections, reduced front setbacks, and private streets, but not for side setbacks. The development, with a density of 0.75 units per acre, aligns with the area's suburban growth plan. Access will be via Burch Park Lane, with improvements coordinated with county staff. 

 

STORY 5: 'Cherokee is Thriving:' Harry Johnston Shares State of the County 

Cherokee County Commission Chair Harry Johnston delivered the State of the County address, highlighting achievements and future priorities. He praised the county's low taxes, strong community services, and economic development. Johnston emphasized managing growth, infrastructure, and housing while maintaining low taxes. He noted the county's growth rate and proposed collaboration with cities to manage it. Johnston addressed road funding shortfalls, suggesting a 1% Homestead Option Sales Tax for property tax relief and road funding. He also discussed affordable housing, proposing targets for new affordable units. Johnston encouraged collaboration to tackle these challenges and ensure the county thrives.

STORY 1:   Northside Hospital Cherokee Has New Hysterectomy Option 

Northside Hospital Cherokee now offers vNOTES, a minimally invasive hysterectomy technique, with Dr. Michael Litrel performing the first procedure on December 11. vNOTES uses the vagina as the access point, avoiding external incisions, and offers benefits like reduced surgical time, shorter hospital stays, less pain, no visible scars, and faster recovery. This method is used to treat conditions like fibroids and cancer. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends vaginal hysterectomy when possible. Northside Hospital also provides other minimally invasive options, including laparoscopic and robotic techniques, and offers vNOTES at Northside Atlanta. 

STORY 2:  Cherokee County Robotics Teams Advance to Super Regionals 

Three Cherokee County School District teams advanced to the super regionals in the First LEGO League robotics competitions. Mill Creek Middle School's LEGO Cats – Pink and Gold teams, and Dean Rusk Middle School's Brick Army II team, earned high scores at regionals. Mill Creek's teams also won the Core Values award. The competitions involve designing and building robots with LEGO Mindstorms to solve missions and completing a research project on ocean exploration. Trophies are awarded in categories like Robot Design and Core Values. The super regional event, featuring top teams, will be hosted by Mill Creek Middle. 

STORY 3:  Service League of Cherokee County Announces Heritage of Hope Finalists 

The Service League of Cherokee County announced the finalists for the 2025 Heritage of Hope Award, honoring individuals committed to community service and supporting children in need. The finalists are Janet Read Welch, Carrie Minicozzi, Buster Cushing, and Courtney Lott, recognized for their significant contributions to Cherokee County. The award winner will be revealed at the Service League’s Annual Gala and Benefit for the Children on January 25 at Timbers on Etowah in Canton. Tickets are $150, with proceeds benefiting Safe Kids Cherokee County. More details and tickets are available at the Service League's website.

STORY 4:   Cherokee County Promotes Eleven Firefighters 

Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services promoted 11 firefighters in a ceremony at the historic Canton Theatre. The event, attended by family and department members, celebrated their dedication and leadership. Promotions included Sergeants Heath Weekly, James Laughlin, and Alissa Whetstone; Lieutenants Eddie Barajas, Ron Davis, and RC Vaughn; Captains Chad Wigington and Brad Gravitt; Battalion Chiefs Josh Wilkie and Brady Cornelison; and Division Chief Scott Deal. Family members pinned badges, marking a new career chapter. Fire Chief Eddie Robinson praised their commitment to serving the community and mentoring future firefighters. 

 

STORY 5: Public Hearing Set For Medical Complex on Union Hill Road 

A public hearing on February 18 will address a developer's request to rezone 7.45 acres on Union Hill Road for two medical office buildings. The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners voted 4-1 to set the hearing, with Chair Harry Johnston opposing. The proposal includes two 25,000-square-foot buildings for office and commercial use. Johnston prefers office/institutional zoning over neighborhood commercial, opposing retail use. The site, near Avery Elementary School, is seen as unsuitable for residential use. The hearing will consider rezoning from agriculture to neighborhood commercial, with potential adjustments to office use. The Planning Commission previously recommended denial, necessitating the hearing.
