Holly Springs police arrested Stephen Andrew Leedy, a Florida man charged with sexually exploiting minors and allegedly directing a girl to hang herself. On December 19, police acted on a notice regarding Leedy, wanted for child pornography and linked to a juvenile's death. After locating his vehicle, they arrested him and handed him over to the FBI. The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Laken Riley Act, named after a Georgia murder victim, as its first act of the new Congress. The legislation mandates detention of illegal immigrants charged with nonviolent crimes. It passed 264-159, with support from 48 Democrats, including Rep. Lucy McBath. Laken Riley, a nursing student, was murdered by an illegal immigrant previously released after shoplifting charges. The case was highlighted by former President Trump during his campaign. The bill now faces a Republican-controlled Senate, needing some Democratic support to pass.

Arcadian's essay emphasized protecting water resources and is available on the CCSD website. He, his family, and teacher Katie Imbriano attended the awards ceremony at the State Capitol. Arcadian will be recognized by the Cherokee County School Board on January 16.

STORY 1:   Three Roses Tavern Opens in Historic Canton Restaurant Space

Three Roses Tavern has opened in downtown Canton, offering a "new American" menu that reflects diverse U.S. cultures. Owned by Salem Makhlouf and Georganne Rose, who also run Local on North, the tavern features a gastropub atmosphere with a menu including steak, burgers, seafood, and more. The venue, formerly R&M Hoagie Shoppe, underwent extensive renovations after closing due to the pandemic. It now boasts two floors with bars, TVs, and historic decor. The tavern aims to elevate Canton's culinary scene and is open daily, with brunch on weekends and outdoor seating planned for summer.

STORY 2:  Eagle Sculpture in Ball Ground Pays Tribute to Veterans

Visitors to the Ball Ground Veterans Memorial can now admire a bald eagle sculpture by local artist Andy Fowler, commissioned to honor veterans. Completed for Veterans Day, the sculpture reflects Fowler's family military history, with his father and grandfather having served. The city, valuing local talent, paid $14,000 for the piece using local business donations. Made from clay, syntactic dough, and epoxy fiberglass, the 28-inch sculpture with a five-foot wingspan mimics bronze through electroplating. Fowler, with extensive film industry experience, plans to create a barley sculpture for next year's Veterans Day.

STORY 3:  Reinhardt AD Jeffrey Pourchier Resigns

STORY 4:   A white Christmas in Georgia? Snow chances in Atlanta next week?

Are there chances for snow in North Georgia this holiday season? Atlanta's Christmas forecast suggests sub-freezing temperatures in north Georgia leading up to the holiday, but dry conditions are expected to persist through Christmas Eve and Day, making a "white Christmas" unlikely. The last significant Christmas snowfall in Georgia was in 2010, with 1-3 inches in metro Atlanta and up to 8 inches in the north Georgia mountains. This was the first measurable Christmas Day snow since 1881, and many Georgians continue to hope for a snowy holiday season.

STORY 5: 4M expected to pass through Atlanta airport during Christmas/NYE holiday period

If you are traveling this holiday season, be prepared for delays. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport anticipates around 4 million passengers during the Christmas holiday period, with the busiest day expected on December 27, seeing over 327,000 travelers. Nationwide, the TSA plans to screen 40 million passengers by January 2. Travelers are advised to check ATL.com for parking updates and monitor real-time wait times at the airport. TSA Administrator David Pekoske warns of potential longer wait times at security checkpoints if a federal government shutdown occurs.

This exemption, effective January 2025, could result in a $14 million revenue loss due to expanded senior tax exemptions and an additional $7.8 million loss if the board doesn't opt out of the statewide property tax cap. Options include opting out, cutting services, or raising the millage rate. The board aims to maintain school quality and is considering public hearings and budget adjustments to address these financial challenges.

STORY 5: Child Care Study Committee Releases Recommendations

Georgia lawmakers are focusing on tax credits to make child care more accessible and affordable. A state Senate study committee recommended new and expanded tax credits for families with young children, employer-sponsored child care, and early childhood educators. These measures aim to offset child-care costs and help providers manage expenses. The committee also suggested creating a child care trust fund and increasing funding for the CAPS program, which supports low-income families. These recommendations will be considered by the Senate in the 2025 legislative session, with support from Lt. Gov. Burt Jones.

STORY 4:   Canton City Council to Vote on 198-Unit Condo Plan Dec. 19

O’Dwyer Properties has proposed building 198 condominiums in Canton on 14.91 acres along April and Lucky Streets near Highway 140. The plan includes 11 three-story buildings with six units per floor, offering one- and two-bedroom condos. Marketed as “missing middle” housing, the project aims to appeal to younger, smaller families. However, concerns have been raised about the density exceeding the area's future land use plan recommendation of 4-6 units per acre, traffic impacts on Highway 140, infrastructure strain, and affordability. The Canton City Council will vote on the annexation, rezoning, and conditional use permit on Dec. 19.

STORY 5: Cherokee Postpones Votes on Townhome Development to Dec. 17

Cherokee County commissioners have postponed two votes on a proposed 102-townhome development near Patriots Park following public opposition. Developer Ashton Woods plans to build on 10.3 acres at Kellogg Creek Road and Victory Drive, with townhome sizes ranging from 880 to 1,176 square feet and a proposed density of 11.95 units per acre. Changes sought include removing a 2005 zoning condition requiring left turn lanes and reclassifying a 0.66-acre county-parcel to allow seven additional units. Residents voiced traffic and safety concerns, opposed selling the county parcel, and suggested the land could enhance Patriots Park. Nearly 600 people signed a petition against the project. Commissioners will now vote on Dec. 17 to consider all related requests.

STORY 1: Canton Approves Expansion of Historic District

The Canton City Council approved the expansion of the city's Historic District with a 5-1 vote on November 21, with Bryan Roach opposing. Mayor Bill Grant emphasized the expansion aligns with the city's goals of enhancing neighborhoods and preserving historic downtown Canton. The expansion, supported by the historical society, extends mainly east along East Main Street and north along Brown Street. Properties added through this expansion will require review by the Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) for any future exterior work. Councilmember Shawn Tolan highlighted the necessity of expansion to maintain the district's character against inappropriate development. The HPC had previously recommended the expansion and new design guidelines. While the council did not vote on design guidelines, these will be set by the HPC. The updated Historic District map and guidelines will be available on the city's website under the Community Development section.

STORY 2: CCFES Collecting Toys for Annual Toy Drive

Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services is hosting its annual Toy Drive, collecting new, unwrapped toys to support local organizations like Toys for Tots and MUST Ministries. Donations can be made at any Cherokee County fire station until December 15, with clearly marked collection boxes available. However, boxes may be temporarily unavailable if crews are out on emergency calls. Fire Chief Eddie Robinson expressed gratitude for the community's generosity, highlighting the Toy Drive as a chance to support children and families in need during the holiday season. For more information or to locate the nearest fire station, residents can visit www.CherokeeCountyFire.com or contact CCFES headquarters at 678-493-4000.

STORY 3: Etowah Senior Named Keep Cherokee Beautiful's Volunteer of the Year

Etowah High School senior Hayden Raffield received the Volunteer of the Year Award from Keep Cherokee Beautiful on November 19, recognized for his environmental dedication. Raffield's volunteer work expanded this year as he successfully advocated for the creation of a Keep Cherokee Beautiful Student Council. This council aims to engage high school students in environmental preservation and community projects, such as Adopt-a-Mile and educational workshops, while fostering leadership skills and civic responsibility. Applications for the council are open until December 20. Additionally, Raffield co-founded the Eagle’s Service Connection club at his school, where he serves as president. In its first year, the club's members completed 700 hours of community service, and membership has grown to over 160 members this school year.

STORY 4: Cherokee County Students Earn AP Scholars Honors

The Cherokee County School District announced that over 900 students have received national AP Scholar awards, recognizing their exceptional performance on multiple AP exams. The AP Program honors students each fall for outstanding college-level achievement, with awards at three levels: AP Scholar with Distinction, AP Scholar with Honor, and AP Scholar. These awards are based on the number of exams passed and the scores achieved. Students scoring 3 or higher on an AP exam can earn college credit, potentially saving on tuition costs. CCSD students collectively earn nearly $4 million annually in Georgia in-state college tuition through AP credits. The district's high schools offer over 30 AP courses. While most AP Scholars are seniors, this year's honorees also include juniors and sophomores, highlighting the district's strong academic performance across multiple grade levels.

STORY 5: Cherokee Recycling Center Hosting Electronics Recycling Event

The Cherokee County Recycling Center is hosting an electronics recycling event on December 14, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Cherokee County Conference Center in Canton. In partnership with ECO Trading LLC, residents can dispose of electronics like computers and printers. Vendors will also collect expired car seats, clothing, textiles, and shoes. Most electronics are accepted for free, but fees apply for televisions ($20), CRT monitors ($10), and large projection TVs ($40). Proceeds benefit Keep Cherokee Beautiful. This drive-thru event requires participants to remain in their cars while volunteers collect items. For more information, call 770-516-4195.

STORY 7: Labor Chief Thompson Dies At Age 59 After Battle With Pancreatic Cancer

Georgia Commissioner of Labor Bruce Thompson passed away at 59, eight months after a pancreatic cancer diagnosis. Thompson chaired several Senate committees, including Economic Development and Tourism. Gov. Brian Kemp praised him as a passionate leader, while Lt. Gov.
