STORY 1: Early Voting in Cherokee County Tops 40K
Cherokee County has seen over 40,000 ballots cast through early and absentee voting, with 37,561 in-person early votes and 3,536 absentee ballots returned. Early voting continues with specific hours until November 1 at various locations, including the Cherokee County Elections Office and several public libraries. The most popular polling sites are Rose Creek Public Library and Hickory Flat Public Library. One day of Sunday voting was offered on October 20. Voters must cast their ballots at assigned precincts on Election Day, November 5, and can check details at mvp.sos.ga.gov. Absentee ballots can be submitted at designated drop boxes during early voting hours.
STORY 2: Two Injured in Commercial Fire on Univeter Road
A fire at Carmichael Development on Univeter Road in Canton resulted in two people being hospitalized with burn injuries. The fire, reported just before 4 p.m., involved a dump truck and Conex trailer, with flames affecting a nearby commercial structure. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze and searched for additional victims, finding none. A significant diesel fuel spill required the Hazardous Materials team for cleanup. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Univeter Road was temporarily closed but reopened by 5:35 p.m. on Monday.
STORY 3: Canton Postpones Decision on Pearidge Road Development
The Canton City Council has delayed a decision on a mixed-use development proposal in the Pearidge community, rescheduling the vote for November 7 to allow more discussion. The proposal by Pearidge Land Investments, LLC involves annexing 62.66 acres and combining it with 8.5 acres already in Canton for a total of 70.72 acres. The plan includes 215 homes and a 1.4-acre commercial site, with amenities like a pool and dog park. The development would feature public streets, sidewalks, and open spaces. A traffic study indicates acceptable service levels for nearby roads. The council will address annexation first, followed by rezoning if approved.

STORY 1: Traffic Concerns Raised Over Proposed Condo Project in Canton
A developer plans to build a 198-unit condominium community in Canton, prompting county commissioners to urge city leaders to consider traffic impacts. O’Dwyer Properties seeks to annex and rezone 14.91 acres for the project, which includes 11 three-story buildings. The development aims to provide "missing middle" housing. Access will be from Highway 140/Waleska Road, with a private road for emergency access. A traffic study is pending, and improvements to Lucky Street are proposed. The Canton City Council will hold a public hearing on November 7, with a vote expected on November 21.
STORY 2: Roundabout Coming to Trickum Road at Little River Park
Cherokee County and Woodstock have agreed to build a roundabout at Trickum Road and Nocatee Trail, enhancing traffic flow and serving as the entrance to the future Little River Park. The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners approved the agreement on October 15, following Woodstock City Council's approval in September. A 2018 traffic study highlighted the need for improvements along Trickum Road. Woodstock will fund the design and right-of-way phases, while the county will cover up to $900,000 or 50% of construction costs. Construction bids began in September, with completion expected in two years.

However, private educational services and transportation sectors saw declines. The number of employed Georgians rose to over 5.2 million, while the labor force grew to over 5.4 million. STORY 1: Trial Set for Cherokee County Woman Charged with Husband's Murder
Six years after the remains of Atlanta attorney Gary Farris were found on his property, his wife, Melody Farris, is set to stand trial for his murder. In July 2018, Gary's burned remains were discovered at their home in Free Home, Georgia. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation determined he was killed by a gunshot, ruling it a homicide. Melody Farris, arrested in Tennessee nearly a year later, faces charges of malice murder, aggravated assault, and concealing a death, to which she has pleaded not guilty. Her trial started yesterday and is expected to last three to four weeks.
STORY 2: Here is What's in Canton's New Parks and Rec Master Plan
The city of Canton has approved its first Parks and Recreation Master Plan to guide future projects and programs. Approved by the city council on October 3, the plan was developed with community input and aims to enhance park services. Key priorities include developing walking trails, natural parks, and hosting festivals. The plan outlines improvements like new parks, trails, and facilities, and suggests funding sources such as grants and donations. It also highlights areas needing park improvements and recommends enhancing accessibility and amenities. The plan is available on the city's website for public access.
STORY 3: Canton Residents Weigh In on Historic District Expansion Plan
Canton officials held a public hearing to discuss expanding the city's Historic District and implementing new residential design guidelines. The proposed expansion would extend the district east and north, affecting properties along East Main Street and Brown Street. While some residents expressed concerns about the guidelines limiting personal autonomy, others, including History Cherokee's Executive Director, supported the expansion for its potential to enhance neighborhood planning and preserve historic integrity. The city council will further discuss these proposals at an upcoming retreat. Feedback can be submitted via email, and the draft guidelines are available online.

STORY 2: What Does the Future Hold for the Former Buffington Elementary?
The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners approved a $100,000 agreement with Jericho Design Group to plan the transformation of the old Buffington Elementary School site into a new fire headquarters and station. The site, part of a 2.89-acre property at 7997 Hickory Flat Highway, also houses a State Farm Insurance office. STORY 6: Gas Station and Retail Store Coming to Southeast Cherokee
The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners approved the zoning change for a gas station and retail store on Arnold Mill Road. The approval passed 4-1, with Chair Harry Johnston opposing, citing concerns about the alignment with the county’s land use plan and preference for neighborhood commercial zoning. Commissioner Weatherby supported the change, citing historical zoning issues. Conditions include operating hours from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., restricted trash pickup, and replanting the buffer with dense vegetation. The development will include a 6,400 square-foot convenience store with gas pumps and a 2,000 square-foot retail building.
