Did you notice, this is, this is the very first encounter there is, in the New Testament, with the risen Jesus. Mary Magdalene gets to meet Jesus before -, in his risen state, before Peter and John do, before anybody else does. And she wasn-t important. She wasn't one of the leading lights. We might have expected it, if it was Mary the mother of our Lord. Meeting Jesus after the Resurrection, we might have expected that, although that doesn-t happen, maybe because God in his providence, who overrides history, knew that she was going to be made too much of. No, it-s Mary Magdalene. And Mary Magdalene, if you hadn-t noticed is a woman. And the word and witness of a woman is not admissible as evidence in law, either Jewish law or Roman law, at that time. These were patriarchal societies. Women were oppressed. Women were disregarded. Women were side-lined. Women were put into their place, their little slot. It was a result of the Fall. And yet here is the beginning of Jesus- purpose, to restore what had been lost in Eden, by man-s disobedience. What had been lost- God says to Eve, -your desire-- literally, -you will turn toward your husband and he will be a despot over you.- And that-s the way it goes on in Genesis, as you find. You go to the next chapter, all women are for is begetting children. The chapter after that, women are taken by a man and made his concubines, and so it goes through the rest of the Bible. Here is the beginning of the retrieval of what women were meant to be before the Fall.

And that place that the LORD your God shall choose for you is the place where I will make my name dwell. And you-ll worship me there.- So fast forward to the time of King Solomon. King David has been along. King David has defeated the enemies. There-s peace in the land. Solomon says, -I intend to build a house for the name of the LORD my God.- Build a house for the name. And that place will be called, -The house for my Name-, as God said. Solomon builds the temple. And the one who does not dwell in the heavens or the heaven of heavens dwells on the earth. And that temple becomes the place where he says, -That is where my name is.- So the name of the LORD is a created thing. It-s a created mental entity. It-s a created category in order to communicate something of the being of God. The being of God can be thought like this- there is God, and there is his name. -If one cannot see the Lord and live, and yet people are seeing the Lord and not dying, who is this visible image of the Lord that is being seen--

And him, having now come into the world, him now having taken on our flesh, him now having overcome Satan by obedience instead of disobedience, him having kept the word of God, him having been obedient and righteous through all his dealings, now having come to this point, having finished that work, having stood in on our behalf, having taken our place, having obeyed where we disobeyed, and him now having shed blood for us on the cross as he is made a sacrifice for our sins - now he cries, -Finished-- -Done-- There is nothing needing to be added to this work. Overview: This Summeros Great Trinitarian Debate----Earlier this summer, back in June, I wrote one very long blog post, that was divided into two and was put out there, which caused some reaction. The last I counted 250 blogs or comments or posts followed that particular post. And it was about the Trinity. You can just Google it for yourself and find out what it was all about. One of the things I learned from that Great Trinitarian Debate of 2016 is that evangelical people cannot agree about who God is. Now that is not to say that the churches cannot agree. In fact, it is the most agreed-about thing in all of Christian history. And if you look up the statements of faith of the Roman Catholic Church, the Lutheran church, the Christian Reformed churches, Presbyterian churches, even Reformed Baptist churches, you will unanimity, harmony and agreement about who God is. We have our great creeds of our faith. We have the great confessions of our church and they are all united in what we believe about God. But apparently evangelicals are not agreed on who God is and itos very vital, isnot it- Because if I happen to be worshipping he wrong God, or I say things about God that are not true of God, what am I doing- Well, Iom committing blasphemy. Iom committing idolatry. And Iom committing heresy. So itos a very serious business. If eternal life is contingent on knowing God and Jesus Christ whom he has sent, the oknowing Godo bit is as vital as me oknowing Jesus Christo bit.----oIt is the witness of Scripture that revelation is the joint activity of the Father, the Son and the Spir----oWeore not saying that the Father has some of God, the Son has some of God and the Spirit has some of God.o

Overview: Transcript of the segment on the Soldiers Gambling-----It wasnot unusual for the soldiers to commandeer the clothing and effects of a crucified or executed man. These would have included an outer garment, an undergarment, a loincloth, a belt, sandals. And the soldiers on duty, apparently four of them that day, cast lots to determine which item belonged to which soldier. In the process of dividing up the stuff, they came across this coat, this undergarment, which instead of being made of different pieces of cloth and sewn together, had been woven in one piece from top to the bottom without a seam. That made it very valuable. Josephus, the Jewish historian, tells us that the high priestos coat, same word, was of this type, woven in one piece. It could be that John recognized that there was some importance to that. And thatos why he reports this fact, that takes place. He says, oThat may be significant,o because he has already emphasized or introduced us to the idea that Jesus was the high priest who offers the sacrifice of himself. But John notices, as he reflects, on -how- this fulfills some words in Psalm 22. John does not tell us why he thought of Psalm 22, but the other gospel writers o John is familiar with what they have written o they tell us why. Thatos because Jesus cried out on the cross, oMy God, my God, why have you forsaken me.o Thatos the very first verse of that Psalm. And very often in the Bible, if not uniformly in the Bible, where a part of a Scripture is cited, we are meant to go and look at the rest of it. And so Jesus is saying, from the cross, oYou want my perspective of whatos going on here, read Psalm 22.o

He wants us to remember that Jesus is the bearer of a greater hope, that he is the High Priest of a better covenant. And he wants that knowledge to be an incentive to you to keep going, keep keeping on. Maybe you-ve stumbled and fallen, maybe you keep falling and getting up again, maybe you have wandered away from your Christian faith, Well, this book of Hebrews wants to reach out to you and to say, -Come back into the race - and run-- In fact, this is the language that is used in chapter 12. There-s an athletic metaphor. The Christian life is like a race. We-ll being watched by a great cloud of witnesses who have run before us and who gather to cheer us on. Ahead of us is Jesus, the pacesetter, the first finisher of the course. And we-re encouraged to -run with endurance the race that is set before us.- We-re to understand that trials in our lives are for our disciplined training in the gymnasium. He uses that word in chapter 12. Sufferings, whether they are inward trials or external circumstances, are a necessary part of the cleaning up, the straightening out, the getting ready for heaven, for the child of God. But above all this, he tells us in this chapter, -Here we have no continuing city.-

Overview: Transcripts from the segment on Peace Both Near and Far----He -Mordecai- sends it out to those who are both -near- and -far-. Both near and far. Very--interesting expression there, because that expression is going to come up again in the New--Testament. Keep that in your head. Near and far. That is a direction quotation from Isaiah--57. I-ll read it to you. Isaiah 57-19 -Peace, peace, to the far and to the near,- says the LORD,--and I will heal him. But the wicked are like the tossing sea- for it cannot be quiet, and its--waters toss up mire and dirt. There is no peace,- says my God, -for the wicked.- Now there--are two connections between that verse and our study today. They are that expression -the--far and the near- and the word -peace-. You-ll find the word -peace- is the very last word at--the end of chapter 10, -He spoke peace to all the people.- In Isaiah it says, -There-s no peace--to the wicked.- One of the things we have learned from the Book of Esther is that, here were--the wicked, who had inspired together against the Lord and against his Anointed. People did--not know that at that time. We know that from the perspective of now. When he conspired to--kill all those Jews, he was conspiring to kill God-s Messiah as well. They conspire together.--But there is no peace for the wicked. The wicked are like the troubled sea, that tosses up--mire and dirt. -There is no peace,- says my God, -for the wicked. But at the end of the Book--of Esther, that tossing sea is stilled for a moment. The people of God enjoy a measure of--peace for a moment, by the grace of God and by God-s providence. But it is not the final--peace.

Overview: Transcript on the segment The Acceptable Sacrifice-----No sin, no death. And if Jesus had been a sinner, he would have had to die for his own sins. But because Jesus is not a sinner, because he is innocent, but because he is sinless, he can step in as our representative man. He can go where the sinful cannot go. As the sinless one, he can stand in our place. He can be our representative. He can carry our sin, because he is not carrying his own. He can bear our punishment, since the punishment he is enduring is not for him, for anything he has done. And thereby he can offer an acceptable sacrifice to God. One of the things we have seen as we have gone through John-s Gospel is that, right from the very beginning in chapter 1, when John the Baptist twice points to Jesus and says, -Behold the Lamb of God-. The Passover has always been in the background. The Passover sacrifice of the lambs that were taken, thousands of them every Passover period, were led to Jerusalem to be sacrificed, in memory of that Passover lamb that died so that the people would be freed from Egypt and bondage in Egypt. The Passover Lamb became a picture of what God-s Messiah would do for us. He would die in our place. Those lambs were examined by the temple priests, and if there was one flaw, one fault, they were not acceptable as a sacrifice. To be the Lamb of God who would carry away the sin of the world, Jesus had to be innocent- he had to be sinless.

Overview: Transcript of the segment on Scripture Narrative-----I have been reminding you that preaching narrative is different from preaching, say, a Pauline Epistle or the writer to the Hebrews or a gospel like John-s. It demands a different style. And in narrative preaching, doctrinal points are not made, therefore, in a formal sense, rather you see the doctrine worked out in the ebb and flow of people-s circumstances and real life experiences. This book of Esther has taught us something about the Providence of God. We can state the doctrine of God-s providence in a very formal way. Do that in our catechism. -God-s works of Providence are his most holy, wise and powerful preserving and governing all his creatures, ordering them and all their actions to his own glory.- That is our confession about Providence. But my question is, as we start, how is it that we come to recognize God at work in the world. Because Providence involves knowledge of God and is only known as God is known. So we need to know God before we can know Providence. And that involves, what- Well, it involves faith. Faith is the gift of God. The gift of God comes by the activity of the Holy Spirit in the human heart, renewing the human heart, and giving to each human being who is regenerate, renewed by the Spirit, the gift of faith. It is this gift of faith, and along with it the work of the Holy Spirit in our minds and hearts that transforms our intelligence, and makes it possible for us to see what, before, we blinded our eyes to seeing.

Overview: Transcripts of the segment on Christ as Blameless----Caught up in these events is this man Pilate. Pilate is the embodiment of Imperial Rome in the region. Embracing, as it did, most of the then-known world, Rome represents humanity as a whole in its official institutions. And three times, in the record, Pilate -in chapters 18 and 19- says three times publicly, officially in his role as the governor and the Roman appointee, -I find no basis for a charge against him.- And to understand the importance of that, we remind ourselves again today, as we come to chapter 19, that Pilate is acting as the legitimate authority in the state, just as the Sanhedrin was the legitimate religious authority within Judaism. Pilate is the legitimate secular authority within the Empire. And so, if you want to think of it as a moment this evening, here we have his own nation, the Jews, against him- here we have the Roman authorities representing the world, as they knew it, against him. Here we see the whole world, both the secular authority and the holy nation both opposed to God-s Christ. Psalm 2 comes to mind. The nations have gathered together against the Lord and against His Anointed, that is against the Lord-s Christ. And what we have the Son of God doing, here in this chapter, is putting himself at the mercy of the nations, the very people he has made.
