But what we know, and Ahasuerus does not know is that these where not just any people. These were not just the same as all the other groups of people that had been overtaken by the Persian Empire. These were the people who were God-s own people. He loved these people. He had covenanted himself to these people. He had given promises to these people. He had given these people a way of access to him, information about himself. These people had the word of God. These were the people of God. She-s feeling this, because she knows this to be the case. She understands that these are God-s chosen, that they have his inheritance, that they are his inheritance. But she doesn-t say that to him. Why- Well, it would be lost on him, number one. Number two, she is modeling to us what Jesus says in the Sermon on the Mount, -Don-t cast your pearls,- that-s the things you wear around your neck, -Don-t cast your pearls before swine,- that-s pigs. In other words, if I put a string of pearls in front of one of my daughters, they would just take it. They know what to do with that. You throw them to pigs, I know what the pigs would do with them. And sometimes there are things you don-t say to the pigs- you don-t say to those who don-t understand the truth, because all you-re going to do is give them fodder for their revulsion to the things of God. There are times to be silent.

First of all, truth is singular. It is not -truths-, but -truth-. Not this is your truth- this is my truth. One coherent reality that holds together history, science, values, life. Truth is singular. Truth is objective. Frances Schaeffer used to talk about -true truth- that matters. -True truth-, something that is true for everyone, whoever they are, wherever they are for all times. It doesn-t change according to the individual. It doesn-t change according to the date. It-s not something that is true for me and is not true for you. Truth is objective- it can be tested, examined and trusted. Truth comes by revelation- here-s the third thing. Truth is a given thing. John-s Gospel has emphasized this. -Grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.- Revelation. Truth is revelation. It doesn-t come by speculation or investigate. It is a given thing. A given thing. We could never have come to know God if God had not disclosed himself. Jesus said to his Father, just in chapter 17 of John-s Gospel, when he comes to the Father there at the beginning of his prayer and he says, -You-ve given me authority to give eternal life to all those whom you-ve given to me. And this is eternal life- that they may know you the only true God and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.- Truth is something that comes by revelation. And supremely in John-s Gospel, and in the Bible generally, truth is personal. It-s not an equation- it-s a person.

Overview: Transcript of the segment on Living-Working in a Secular Environment- Whoever you are, woman or man, young or old, you must never, ever think that serving God falls into this exclusive category, this hyper-spiritual category, of being only for the super-saints among you. Now I may have given you that impression. I don-t want you to get that impression, that it-s only for the super-saints, that it-s only for those who are in -quote- -full-time Christian work.- That would be the most egregious failure on the part of anybody teaching from this pulpit, to let you go away with that idea in your head. Christian work is good. It serves its purpose in encouraging the people of God. But let-s face it, God is most served in the world by people who are not in any kind of spiritual work or Christian work. Let-s be honest. God is served by this congregation in the places where God is pleased to place you. Here is Esther and she is in this stunningly secular situation, in the sense that this situation she is in has no place for the recognition of the God of Israel- no place for the worship of the God of Israel. And she has been placed in this situation which she would never have chosen for herself. She had not entered some competition, some beauty competition in order to make it into the king-s harem. She would not have chosen the life that she has. Yet in the midst of this life, she has not lost her identity, even in the plush, lavish world of the royal court. She has maintained her integrity as one of God-s people.

Overview: Transcript of the segment on Understanding Suffering---Scripture shows us that suffering can be understood in three ways. Firstly, suffering can result from a God-cursed world. Second, suffering also results from our sin. And thirdly, suffering results from persecution for the sake of Christ. The first kind of suffering results from living in a fallen world. Because of man-s rebellion against God and his fall into sin, God has cursed the same world which he created -very good-. In Genesis chapter 3, we read where God speaks to Adam and Eve. And to Adam he said, --cursed is the ground because of you- in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life- thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you- and you shall eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken- for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.- Brothers and sisters, this is a snapshot of what life under the curse looks like. Overview: Transcript of the segment on Knowing the Unknowable God-----God is in himself invisible and incomprehensible. Because we cannot see him and because we cannot fathom him, it is easy for people to disregard him. Some have taken this disregard for God to a philosophical level and they posited that God is dead. Of course, they don-t think that God ever existed by their thinking of God as a concept, God as an influence, God as a power in the world, God as something that has to be reckoned with. God is dead. That-s the conclusion that many people in our society would draw today. There are many people who simply wish that God was dead or they act as if his influence has been eradicated from the world. This book of Esther has been helpful, really, in addressing that kind of context, because it is written without any direct reference to God. It-s as if the book sees the world the way so many of our contemporaries see the world, as a closed system, a system from which God is consciously and deliberately excluded. Of course, what we have discovered as we have read through the book of Esther is that God-s fingerprints are all over the book, just as God-s fingerprints are all over everything that God has made. You just need to read Romans chapter 1 to discover that creation, in all of its parts, displays God-s glory. God is only known to us creatures from what has been made. We cannot know God as he is, in himself. That is incomprehensible and incredible. It-s beyond our understanding. We can only know God through the things that God has made. Overview: Transcript of the segment on How God Hates Religion-----Their religious scruples did not allow them to go into Gentile territory. The Gentiles were -dogs-. Pilate-s palace was Gentile territory. They couldn-t go there in a religious festival. They couldn-t participate in their own religious feast of the Passover, one of the high holy days. So they kept outside, while delivering Jesus into the hands of a Gentile to be examined and to be tried. You know, a little aside here, it-s the feature of bigots and legalists to this day, that they cannot see the -wood- -forest- for the trees. So here were people who paid absolutely no attention to the minute details of their own law in processing this man-s trial, who were absolutely concerned about this detail, about their own religious ceremonial performance. They were prepared to negotiate with the rules, but in such a way as to preserve their own kudos in the community. This is why God sometimes hates religion. Sometimes God hates our religion when he sees our religion as a meticulous observance of details that don-t matter, to the exclusion of a heart that is renewed by the Holy Spirit and engaged with the worship of God. And we need to pause for a moment, I think, as we look at this- that it is very easy for humanity, for us even, to take a good thing - pure religion -- and turn it into an occasion of power or bullying, to use it for our own advantage rather than to use it for the glory of God. It-s the easiest thing in the world.---He -the Son of God- is allowing himself to be ceremonially defiled at the Passover- he will allow himself to be placed upon the cross and thus becomes a curse so that he might be the Passover Lamb,

Overview: Transcript of the segment on the Third Day-----A friend of mine, David Strain, drew attention to the Jewish midrash. The Jewish midrash is a kind of commentary on this passage. And it focuses of the Jewsa three days of fasting under the threat of death and the way that God answered it. And hereas what the midrash says- It declares aIsrael -quote- Israel is never left in dire distress more than three days.a And it points to Hosea chapter 6, one of the prophets, aAfter two days, he will revive us. On the third day, he will raise us up that we may live before him.a And what the midrash says, unwittingly, happens. You see these three days are not thrown in there as kind of and irrelevant detail. Theyare of great significance in the Bible, these three days. Jonah is in the belly of the fish three days. He emergence meant life for Jonah, but also life for people in Nineveh who would hear the gospel through Jonah. Those three days were days of prayer under the shadow of death. And now on the third day as Esther ventures all on the will of God, there is life and hope. And when Estheras Savior comes into the world, he is not only under the risk of perishing, but he comes to perish. He comes into the world to die for his peopleas sins. He comes to bear their sins in his own body on the cross. When he is delivered over for our trespasses, he is raised on the third day for our justification.----aThe royal scepter, as it were, is pointed at Jesus in the grave, and it spells life to him and it spells life to all the Israel of God.a--aHaman is the first person to conceive of the Final Solution to the Jewish Question.a--aHitler, as well as Haman, engaged in the kind of occultic activity

Overview: Transcript of the segment on Simon Peter---Peter was left standing with the enemy. Look at v. 16, v. 18, v. 25. -Peter was also with them standing and warming himself.- In verse 5, this was said about Judas. And Judas, when the arresting offices came, Judas the traitor was standing there with them. And by his denial of Jesus, he put himself in the same place as Judas, on the side of Christ-s enemies. -If you are not for me, Jesus said, you are against me.- -Whoever is not for me is against me.- Peter is putting himself there. He putting himself in that place which Psalm 1 talks about, as it describes the downward progression of a person, who -walks in the counsel of the wicked and stands in the way of sinners.- Here is Peter standing in the way of sinners. The story of Peter-s betrayal and denial exposes something about us all. It is this, that we under-estimate the darkness of our fallen human hearts. We don-t realize what we are capable of. And like Peter we may profess loudly our love and loyalty to Jesus, and we no doubt mean it, from the very bottom of our hearts. But we must be very careful not to put our confidence in our own strength of character. We must be careful that we don-t think that, somehow or other, just by saying it, it is so. We must always be guarding our hearts.

Overview: Transcript of the segment on Being Indispensable-----Jacob promised that the royal scepter would not depart from the house of Judah. He -Mordecai- was thinking of the promise that God made to David, who came from the house of Judah. He was a Jew and he became king. And God said to David, oIom going to raise up from your posterity, Iom going to raise up someone who will be the Messiah-King, and who will reign over an everlasting kingdom. He will reign forever and ever. Mordecai believed that. He believed that one day the Messiah would come. And he believed that, on the basis of Messiahos message, one day in the future to a Samaritan woman by a well in Samaria, salvation is of the Jews. And he reasons, Mordecai reasons from the promises of God into his circumstances, and he says to Esther, oIf you keep silent at this time, relief and deliverance will rise for the Jews, from another place. In other words, what he is doing as he speaks to Esther is that he is teaching her a lesson. He teaching her that, number 1, she has an opportunity to serve the purpose of God. She may die, by the way, in pursuing that path of obedience. But she has the opportunity to serve the purposes of God. Number 2, he is saying to her, oYou are, however, not indispensable to the purposes of God. No one ever is. No one ever is indispensable to the purposes of God. God buries his workmen, but his work goes on.o
