It is Wednesday, April 1st, 2020! Welcome to the latest episode of I Like Books. Listen as we go through our usual segments:
AUTHOR CRUSH: Lulu's current author crush is Sue Monk Kidd, who wrote The Secret Life of Bees. Alison's author crush this month was chosen because he was born on April 1st, and you know how she loves a theme! Edmond Rostand's poetry is what she can't get enough of right now. His play Cyrano de Bergerac was adapted into a modern day movie starring Steve Martin, called Roxanne.
Gals Analyzing Sentences, aka GAS: Lulu analyzes the opening line from George Orwell's 1984 - “It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen.” Could there be a better way to start a book about a world where not everything makes sense by having the clocks strike thirteen? Alison selected a passage from Everything Under by Daisy Johnson - "I am thirteen years old, and indebted to you and to words, and to the tangle of bank and water and forest." Her out-of-context analyzation is fascinating, she didn't read the sentences around her selected sentence. As in, she didn't read the book.
I LIKE BOOKS (Book Review): This week we are reviewing the delightful children's book Sheeple, written by Royal Ragsdale and published by Happy Face Books, and the California Heritage Cookbook from the Junior League of Pasadena in 1976.
Bible Bait and Switch: The fan-favorite segment where you walk into a hotel room and switch out that top drawer bible with any book of your choosing! Lulu chooses a bold replacement - Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal. Alison goes for a practical choice - Anger Management for Dummies.
What’s Been Okay Today?: Being able to remove and sew on a button, and opening up a pickle jar on one try, are the parts of our days that were #okaytoday! What about your day was just okay? Share with us!
