Being a ‘man’ in a changeable world across many generations of confusion and expectation is challenging, and constant. In society, across generations of expectations, being a man is a potentially displaced, irrelevant yet a relevant space to occupy, where there is some disparity and polarised positionalities of confusion. The third space occupied by this man - is an evolving space, a self-defined space, defined by default of exclusion to absolute historical and current representations or localities of constructs of masculinities. In the third space, the self-defined man examines and adapts to change in their endeavour to grapple and meet the requirements of societal pressures about what being a man means… today.
In this episode, I share my father’s journey… an academic journey in part, into his understanding of what being a man meant to him across 80 plus years… where his view of ‘space’ represents a journey of a man grappling with societal views of masculinities…
