In search of balance and financial freedom, Maria left a life of eating out, catwalks, and a killer job in Silicon Valley for a life of Dickies and tool belts; DIY-rehabbing, and renting apartments in Helsinki, Finland. And she loves it.

Maria founded a real estate investing company in Finland in 2018 in which she now works full-time as the CEO focusing on buy-and-hold rental apartments using the BRRRR strategy. She believes tenants have the right to live in a wonderful home they love which is why she designs the apartments individually adding some pizazz.

When she’s not busy keeping her two toddlers from eating paint or piercing each other with power tools, she loves running and laughing and inspiring others to act even though they’re scared.

Before I answer that, I have to say I didn’t do everything all by myself. Cause that’s important for other moms to know that I did get help, but I was the driver. So yeah. Thank you for your kind words. The balance, I actually want to respond to and say I don’t think the pressure that comes from trying to balance it all. It just adds another thing to the list we end up not doing. I have given myself permission to say, I don’t have to balance it all.

It all comes down to focus. I have chosen a lot of things that I don’t do. I stopped watching TV,  which is one thing that I gave up and I don’t shower as much as I would like.

If you want to go after your goals and really provide the life you want for your family, some things have to fall off the wagon and that’s okay.

Or like, what are you willing to do to make that happen?

This is hard. I’m not the best at this, which is, why I, try to work on it a little better. Time blocks are one that has helped me. Before I start my day, I choose one thing to focus on business-wise to get done. Only one thing, not three, one, just the one. I then physically write down into a calendar.

Oh, yeah, totally. I even talk to them about compound interest. I try to teach them about delayed satisfaction i.e. you can have five candies now, but if you wait a little longer you can have more. That type of thing.

I think I struggle with, creating another wheel for myself. I talked about this a little bit in the previous episode. Not enjoying the things that I’ve already created. I think it was a friend of mine who pointed out, “Maria, why are you running so fast? Why don’t you just pause a little bit and enjoy everything that you already have?”  I think I’m still being too hard on myself, not ever feeling that I’m good enough, and I think that I’m always having this mom guilt. Not feeling like I’m enough as a mom or always feel like I still have to prove myself business-wise. But, it’s also what drives me. Achiever is one of my strengths, but it also becomes an Achilles heel.
