Welcome to the 150th episode of the Tooth or Dare Podcast with Irene Iancu (@toothlife.irene) and this week's guest Andrew Johnston (@ataleoftwohygienists).
Irene and Andrew have a lot in common - they are both registered dental hygienists, seasoned podcasters, and passionate about business - so don’t be surprised if you forget who’s interviewing who!
With so much focus on the clinical side of things in school, new hygienists may find themselves unprepared for the ins and outs of job hunting, working with others in a real office, or even running their own practice. What separates a successful dental office from a struggling one, and how can you tell during a job interview? What can you do as a clinician to keep up with the standard of care? Andrew is not afraid to share everything he’s learned from his years as a hygienist, including his most embarrassing mistakes. Plus, hear the story of how Irene got shut down vlogging through restorative school.
Andrew Johnston:
Andrew has been a registered dental hygienist for almost 15 years practicing in private practice and corporate settings. Always with the mind for business he was promoted through the positions becoming a Director of Dental Hygiene in 2020. In 2015 he co-founded a podcast called A Tale of Two Hygienists which started off as weekly shows that evolved into thrice weekly releases. Due to its popularity and monetization strategies, he sold his company to Endeavor Business Media where he currently works as Director of Podcast Content and Strategy. Andrew attributes his success to hard work, a lot of luck, and always keeping the focus on the patient's health outcomes.
