This is a question people rarely ask themselves, when it comes to their big ‘life-shaping’ beliefs. It’s too scary. And uncomfortable. Especially when they have a long history with that belief. 
Especially when their identity is intertwined with that belief. When you believe you’re absolutely right about something, then you also believe that everyone in the world who doesn’t agree with you, is automatically wrong.
