First up, Jay presents a lovely retrospective of Loretta Lynn’s impressive career. She was 30 and had six kids before directing her time and energy into her music. The daughter of a coal miner, Lynn’s authenticity became a feature of her music and story. She embraced her roots, wrote and sang about her life and never shied away from taking a stand on issues, regardless of whether they were popular or not. She wrote 24 No. 1 songs, won 3 of the 18 Grammy nods, and had 11 of her 60 albums reach No. 1 on the charts. We listen back to a few of her best and pay our respects to America’s favorite Coal Miner’s Daughter.

Nick was feeling some King Gizzard withdrawal a couple episodes ago, but only because he hadn’t bothered checking the news! They’ve just released “Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms and Lava”, their first of three albums coming out this month. For this album, they went into the studio with a tempo & a mode, jammed and then made a song of each. Nick decided this was a good time for a refresher course on Modes. From Mr. Bungle to Faith No More, Fantômas to Dead Cross to Tomahawk; collaborations with artists like Björk, John Zorn, The Melvins; in styles covering scatting, crooning, rapping, growling and more… he’s a prolific artist worthy of multiple examinations.
