Jay is at a conference, so it’s just Nick & Greg this week.

Nick isn’t thrilled at the direction that Tame Impala is going, Greg encourages him to withhold judgement until the album comes out. Meanwhile, in LA, Greg caught some local shows with some familiar faces and even jammed on a tune or two.

Greg is a huge fan of Howard Stern, so Nick was curious to get discuss the rumors that Howard may not be staying on SiriusXM. Greg assures Nick that this isn’t a new dance for Howard fans. Lars Ulrich was on Howard recently, raving about the Oasis reunion tour. So Greg snagged some tickets to catch their show in September!

Terry Reid passed last week at the age of 75. He had a voice lauded by the likes of Aretha Franklin and Robert Plant, and was nearly the lead singer of Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin. Speaking of Zeppelin, Greg highly recommends checking out the documentary “Becoming Led Zeppelin,” released earlier this year and now available on Netflix.

Greg kicks things off with a Three for Thursday! Alex G is an indie artist that just released his tenth studio album Headlights. Greg thinks his unique voice and sound would be difficult to reproduce. We hear the great Lee Morgan solo on the title track of his 1979 album Sonic Boom. Finally, winner of this year’s “How Have I Not Already Listened to This Album?” award, it’s Evening Star by Robert Fripp & Brian Eno.

Jay & Nick provide a joint Tales from the Concert. King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard is doing a 7-show tour with a live orchestra for their 27th studio album, Phantom Island. They performed alongside the National Symphony Orchestra on Monday, Aug 4 at Merriweather Post Pavilion. Jay & Nick were present, and quite impressed, to say the least.

Jay and his family are visiting Luray Caverns and his connection is a little spotty this week. Jay recently experienced the Great Stalacpipe Organ. Invented in 1954, it is the world’s largest musical instrument, covering 3.5 acres.

Greg recently produced a song for the band Velzy. Singer Nate Turner (also of the Red Nots) joins the show to talk about the process of recording their latest single, “Flicker.”

Greg shares the news of two incredible concerts that happened this past week. These shows will undoubtably go down in history and have movies about them. Ozzy Osbourne’s final concert with Black Sabbath was an all day celebration with an incredible array of rock and metal artists. This week also marked the first Oasis reunion concert, and by all accounts the show was incredible.

Friend of the show Alex Kline turned 40 this year, and to mark the occasion, Nick took him to see 311 at The Anthem, because nothing says milestone birthday like a throwback alternative rock show. In this Tales From the Concert, Nick runs through the openers, the crowd, the setlist, and wrestles with a complicated truth: maybe 311 isn’t quite as cool as teenage Nick remembers... but they’re still a lot of fun.

Greg is back to catch us up on his run of shows the last two weeks. The Red Not Chili Peppers had a great show at House of Blues Orlando with Pearl Jam tribute band Given to Fly. Then Greg traveled on to St. Petersburg with The Resilient for a show at Jannus Live to benefit The Reborn Project. It seems like Greg has been saying “man this month has been crazy” a lot lately, but June feels particularly hectic. We’re happy to have him back!

On the eve of the release of Bruce Springsteen’s Tracks II: The Lost Albums, Jay would like to celebrate The Boss. The new box set will contain seven full-length and unreleased albums recorded between 1983 and 2018. The albums come out Friday, June 27th, so we only have access to the singles released so far. Jay dives back into Springsteen’s 1984 Born in the U.S.A. and promises more discussion in the episodes to follow about the new release.

In recent years, Greg has developed a deeper appreciation for Word of Mouth, Jaco Pastorius’s second solo album. While the record receives mixed reviews—some hearing signs of the personal struggles with addiction and mental health that would later claim Jaco’s life at just 35—Greg has come to believe there's something really special about it. Jay remembers Rick Derringer & Sly Stone. Mr. Derringer, who passed at the age of 77, had a decades long career as a guitarist, songwriter, and producer. Stephen Thomas Erlewine said, in Allmusic, “James Brown may have invented funk, but Sly Stone perfected it." Mr. Stone passed last week at the age of 82.
