Inside that box is something no parent ever imagines they’ll have to carry… the skull of their child. Eighteen years ago, their daughter left home to work in a distant city. They never saw her again – until this moment, in the form of a few bone fragments. As the mother, Ayesha, cradles a piece of the skull in her palms, she whispers a prayer through tears. Around them, a cluster of people – activists, lawyers, well-wishers – watch in somber silence. Some are crying too. They all know they are witnessing the final chapter of a horrific story. Ayesha closes her eyes and says, “Let no mother on earth have to see this day.” Today, the remains of Safiya are going home. This, is her story.
