Just a heads up, this is the second last episode before I take a month long break over October and start recording again. Please rate the podcast five stars 🌟 I make the podcast with zero financial support and help. It would mean a lot to me!

Keziah is a Naarm-based painter with her own distinct style and narrative. She is also a drag artist with the stage name, Bae b Tooth. Her story is vibrant, brilliant and demonstrates her growth as a person. She has been apart of several different creative avenues; tattooing, animation and painting, where she found her voice!

We talk about her journey into art, her upbringing, sex-positive art, feminism, the male gaze vs female gaze, body image and self-care as we enter our thirties and more.

Keziah grew up in a religious household drawing Disney cartoons and trying to explore live drawing with her siblings. As a teenager, she studied art in high school but didn't have the best experience, which I don't find surprising considering I also had a pretty rough time with tertiary art. As a young adult, she moved to Brisbane and enrolled into TAFE doing an Advanced Diploma in Animation where she ended up finding her people. It was vast contrast of her previous experience - but allowed her to further her exploration of artistry. She moved into tattooing but didn't have the best experience during her apprenticeship. From COVID lockdowns, Kezamine started working on her paintings. From that she is harnessing her skills more.

Kezamine is now living in Naarm, breathing fresh creative energy into her art. She focuses on vibrant and colourful portraiture and expressive poses using the human body through the female gaze. She emphasises the unconventional beauty we all have within us and champions those aspects we may shun.   

About Keziah:
Keziah Gall (Kezamine) is a mixed media artist based in Naarm, Australia (Melbourne). Her practice provokes discussions of gender, sexuality and intimacy, by distorting the perception of the body.

Through the use of a vibrant colour palette and sexually graphic imagery, she welcomes you into her personal world in a way that is inviting, tantalising and stylistically unique to her work. Combining techniques from her studies in animation, comic design and street art, Kezamine’s work is illustrative, bold and unapologetic.

Drapl is one of Brisbane's most well known street artists. His past roots with spray paint started with graffiti, something that we discuss within this episode. His decision to move away from graffiti and into street art was what opened up creative opportunities for him, and thus lead him to becoming one of Australia's best street artists.

Throughout the whole conversation, Drapl is honest about his feelings and attitudes towards art. His determination to continue his practice when faced with large-scaled works is what makes him such a fantastic painter. Undeniably, this determination has contributed to the melting pot of which Brisbane is becoming. He is an invaluable part of Brisbane culture and throughout the wider Australian communities he visits, both rural, regional and otherwise.

Without artists such as Drapl, we would not be able to advance culturally through the arts. Drapl has demonstrated, not only through his artwork but also through his words, that his abilities are transforming the spaces we live in. These transformations are positively impacting all of us who are able to see them in person and online. I look forward to seeing how his creations inspire future artists and allow growth for Australian communities culturally.

ABOUT DRAPL:
Travis Vinson, also known as Drapl, (Dr Apple) is a multidisciplinary artist who has been painting in Brisbane and across Australia over the last twenty-seven years. 

Drapl has painted every type of mural imaginable and has been a professional artist for as long as he can remember. He first picked up spray paint when he was fourteen years old and never stopped! 
 
Drapl is known for his abstract energetic portraits that usually include a quote of whatever is inspiring happiness for him that week. For some projects, he teams up with The Zoopkeeper. These are typically large scaled works such as silos and water tower projects around Australia. 

Drapl’s work can be seen all around Brisbane, especially on the many restaurants, cafes, nightclubs and bars. His work always brings a smile to the onlookers eyes.

About KYEL 925:
KYEL 925’s is a photographer who's work focuses on the art of documentation and journalism, often delivering a unique perspective and love for underground communities. His photography has a life-style approach, often taken through a 35mm film camera he can fit in his pocket, bum bag or hang around his neck.

Through this process, Golly has travelled and actively found artists, youth culture and unique characters that are often under-exposed or misunderstood. His documentation has covered a large network of subjects from general street culture on his travels (overseas and East Australia), too teenage exploration and curiosity for the unknown.

His 35mm Photography Zine releases currently include: ‘Golly Elyk’ (2012) ‘Japan’ (2014) & ‘Them.Dam.Vandals’ (2015) ‘Melbourne’ (2015). In 2017, Kyle released a 4-year photo book named ‘Not Your Ordinary’ covering digital work from 2012-2015. Now his work focuses on sharing the stories and lives of local artists in Brisbane through a collective he established in 2018 called ‘No.One Network’.

Established in 2018, NO.ONE NETWORK was formed through a network of creatives being documented from inner-city Brisbane. From street artists and graffiti, to rappers and fashion designers, to beat makers and DJ’s, to guerrilla photographers and everything in-between. Through our work and community, No.1 Network aims to form an ultimate urban nexus of artists amongst Brisbane’s ‘youth culture’ & provide support for the local community. Through a collaboration we would aim to shine light on the company via local artists who have lived and breathed Brisbane’s culture.

In this episode, I chat with Matt who is the artist behind Granny Prints. He is a social worker and visual artist from Sydney. We connected online as I started exploring lino printmaking. Printmaking is a practice that requires patience, trust and the methodology of trial and error.

Matt is a passionate artist who has dedicated his time to helping others not only through his art, but through his social work. He openly discusses his journey with mental health as a cis-man, something which needs to be more of an open conversation and I appreciate Matt's vulnerability when discussing this.

I look forward to seeing Matt's development as an artist within the next coming years. His ability to generate beautiful art discussing topics which speak true to the current zeitgeist is something I think he should be really proud of.

Matt is an emerging artist, primarily focused on printmaking, who is living and creating on the lands of the Gadigal & Wangal people (Sydney, Australia). Matt uses his creative pursuits to help manage the ups and downs of being a human living through late-stage capitalism.

Macami is a Brazilian photographer currently based in Sydney, Australia where she is undertaking her Masters degree. She is experimenting with the duality of movement and light with her artworks. They are based around surrealism with a gorgeous essence of dream like notions.

Our discussion was based around how she became a photographer. She is very educated and I appreciate her ability to be able to undertake so much study and still stay on her desired path. I was incredibly excited to talk with her because her works require so much foresight and planning. It was definitely great to hear from someone who expresses themselves through the lense because she absolutely has mastered her abilities with a camera.

This conversation is perfect for those who want to embark on a photography journey, or if they are curious how the arts in Australia is for someone like Macami. Thank you Macami for coming on the podcast I really appreciate your words and the craft you're mastering!

Aki Yaguchi is an artist based in Naarm (Melbourne), Australia. She creates these gorgeous murals and artworks with a figure as the main focus. I have been wanting to have her on my podcast for quite some time now! I think the work she makes is gorgeous and I have been really curious about who that figure is and what inspired it.

We discuss her journey into art and her works, how she has found running an art business, what her self-care routine is like, and what the future holds for her.  It was a really lovely conversation, and I feel like even though Aki is going through a period of change - her new works after this period will be amazing and have that level of soul she's looking for.

Aki Yaguchi is a Japanese/Australian artist and illustrator based in Melbourne, Australia. Her art explores the interplay between her heritage and femininity, and is often centred around “Tobu Hime”, or ‘floating girls’; they are the visual representation of Aki’s imagination, a vehicle for her creativity, a mascot for her identity, and a friendly companion. The Tobu-Hime are a sign of good fortune and safety to all those who come across them. Her work spans across multiple mediums, including paintings, drawings, large scale murals, digital works, sculptures, installations, and apparel.

While pursuing formal education, Cax found himself caught up in the world of graffiti, charged with over 200 graffiti offences and facing a lengthy jail sentence. We discuss this turbulent period of his life, the challenges he faced, and Cax shares the valuable lessons he learnt during that period. We discuss life after graffiti, he shares the incredible breakthrough moments that helped to propel him into the commercial spotlight.  He also offers advice for aspiring artists,shares the wisdom he would impart to his younger self.

About Cax One:
With over 20 years experience, self-taught artist Cax One has taken lessons learned from his own graffiti and street art practice and applied these skills, styles, and techniques for applications in galleries, festivals, workshops, and events across the country. His style is an accumulation of references from character design, illustration, graffiti type, and cartoons, with bright, bold colours, sharp, gestural lines, and explosive movement. 

Cax has many accolades and well known clients under his belt, including a record opening attendance at Ballarat’s Red Brick Gallery, painting live murals at Falls Festival, reinterpreting a character for Sesame Street, and producing work as part of a national campaign for Telstra. Cax has also lent his dynamic style of illustrative graffiti to adorn the walls of Melbourne’s largest Street Art Festival: Can’t Do Tomorrow, and for Just Another Agency’s Augmented Mural Trail as well as a fun anamorphic installation for The Art Maze: Under the Sea.

The evolution of Cax’s practice has been documented in a short film by Mitch Nivalis which featured on ABC Open, and his works have also gained recognition with features in ‘Street Art: Australia’ and ‘Inside Street Art’, two publications chronicling Australia’s most influential street artists. Despite boasting a full portfolio of diverse and large-scale events and work, Cax continues to dedicate significant time to mentoring young artists and at-risk youth in both Ballarat and Melbourne.

In this episode, I speak with Brisbane based artist Emmauel Moore. A key focus in this discussion is how  moving away from your roots, taking on feedback and critiques can help you within an arts practice and ultimately help you flourish into a better artist.

Emmanuel's deep love for art is evident through his journey from graffiti to fine art. Although Emmanuel didn't finish high school, he applied himself through his tertiary education, finishing his BFA at University of Canberra. His knowledge with art history is incredible, and we had a great conversation about Dali and his influences. There is so much to this conversation, that I can't describe in the introduction. About Emmanuel Moore:
Emmanuel Moore is an Australian painter based in Brisbane. He is best known for is public and canvas works depicting inanimate objects and nature such as trains and flowers, though now focuses on still life and observational painting. He predominantly uses acrylic and spray paint and explores a variety of illustration and traditional techniques to produce his work. Since finishing a bachelor degree in visual art at the University of Canberra (2019), he has exhibited paintings at the Caloundra Regional Gallery, as well been apart of a variety of group exhibitions throughout Australia.

I am calling this art chat because we spoke about a huge range of subjects; her journey, studio, businesses, fashion and art practice, and more! There is no one way to describe her, she is an incredible artist and human being.

This is also PART 1 because we both decided we are going to do a follow up art chat at a later date. We could literally talk for hours!

About Phoebe Paradise:
A self-taught artist, Phoebe’s commercial illustration practice began in the early 2010s, producing hand-drawn, collaged and xeroxed gig flyers, merchandise designs and record covers for punk bands, indie labels and local venues. Throughout the course of her career, this music community has been a bedrock of support and inspiration for Paradise, who is also well known for her involvement in local underground acts. (Lexicon & Pleasure Symbols most notably). 

In 2014, Phoebe began developing arts merchandise of her own to sell at craft markets, boutiques and the then-burgeoning online marketplace. Inspired by the DIY methodology of her local punk band clientele, the label PARADISE was borne. From humble beginnings of photocopied zines, hand drawn t-shirts and custom-painted vintage leather, the label quickly grew to popular cult status across Australia. In a few short years, the label went on to produce multiple collections of fashion garments and accessories, high profile photoshoots, runways, artist collaborations & pop-up shops.

In early 2020, her focus diverted from retail output by the COVID-19 outbreak, Paradise was unexpectedly commissioned a series of highly visible public art installations which catapulted her work into the wider public eye. The Brisbane City Council’s Outdoor Gallery Program commissioned Paradise to produce several light-box illustrations (installed in Brisbane’s CBD), and an animated projection, entitled Subtropical Surreal, which would go on to become her first Public Art Collection acquisition.

Soon after the success and visibility of these public outcomes, Phoebe was swept up in a whirlwind, year-long national campaign for ‘Behind the Mac’ by Apple. The multi-faceted campaign centered Paradise’s visual arts journey (rather than her fashion designs), and included original illustrations and the recently acquired Subtropical Surreal. This campaign was the start of a change in direction for Paradise’s career, who began a marked pivot away from the label, and instead toward public art & exhibited works.

Michael Delany is a powerhouse of a creative and individual. He is an artist, interior designer, and nightclub owner in Sydney and Melbourne. I have adored Delany's artworks for a few years now, he has this ability to make you pause and check yourself physically and mentally - something I find to be very provocative. His use of block colours draws you into his artworks and encourages you to look further. To see his art, click on his IG link below!

In this episode, we reflect on his journey of art, interior design, and owning nightclubs. We talk about his art and how his journey into art, his techniques, how to deliver an excellent title, and how where he gets his inspiration from. We delve into a bit of the business side of things and we talk about running a nightclub in the early 2000s. This episode was absolutely awesome to record - Delany is a hugely talented artist.

About Michael Delany:
Michael Delany is an aged emerging artist who would describe his paintings as being figurative, existential, romantic and dadaist. 

Although he will paint the human face, these paintings are not really portraits. Human forms are used as sympathetic tools to form a puzzle created in sync with the paintings’ titles.  These are visual poems that speak about optimistic mediocrity, public secrecy, mistaken empathy, euphoric hubris and the exhiliration of doom.

His previous solo shows include :
