This week we have a very quick talk about the few games one can play on holiday with wives and children, or at least, one of us does.  There’s also a lot of bollocks at the end regarding licensing issues and the fun and games about why Australians probably pirate a lot more than other people.

This week we’re uncharacteristically serious as we’re looking at games based on real life conflicts, so we’re sorry if we’re a bit flat.  Also, we’re recording on Easter Sunday and both of us are feeling the pressure from having spent the day socialising.  Hope all you listening out there had a great time with loved ones.

This week Paul and I speak about a whole bunch of things, including the question do you prefer to binge on episodic content or retain a certain amount of time between meals, so to speak.  Let us know in comments or shoot us an email.  THe main crux of our conversation though is do you prefer to binge yourself up on something or do you like to take your time?  I use the Telltale Walking Dead season 1 and The Wolf Among Us as my examples.  Let us know what you think!

Have you ever tried to play games with a spouse or partner that just isn't really into it?  It's a tough one and both Paul and I have tried this one and found out that it doesn't really work out for us.  It might however work out well for the couple in the podcast I listened to this week:

They're called Marital Gaming and rather than being about the games a married couple can get into to spice things up in a very certain context it's more about a man and his wife sharing their experiences around a game each episode.  It's a very charming podcast and nice to see a couple growing together by sharing a nice experience together.  Paul talks up his new favourite S-Town, which is a joint product between This American Life and Serial, which is like hearing that Brad Pitt and Angelina Joile had a baby, which they did, but it's all grown up and has made something VERY interesting.

In the description there on Steam it says it is all about the cycle of rebirth.  Paul says the audio itself makes the game worth playing so if you like good audio then get yourself along.

It sounds like a cookie-clicker but it also sounds like a fun and enjoyable entry to the genre, when you need something to zone out with on a bus.

Chess but interesting.  I mentioned in the podcast that chess has, professionally speaking, anyways become a very stilted game and this game has made me wish that I had the kind of phone that can run this one.  Still have Duelyst though, which I am very much into.

Life moves faster than even Ferris Bueller could have predicted, hence this podcast ins a couple of days late.  This is largely because Paul and I tried something new!

 

We went and saw a movie together the day after we would record and decided to feature it on the podcast so it put everything off.  We’ll try not to let it happen again.

I want to put out here  a quick shout out to both Bob and Luke, 2 cool guys I met and have chatted with because of Duelyst.  IF you haven’t played any Duelyst go and give it a darn good go.  I recently found out that one of the lead designers, Eric Lang was also one of the guys that put together the XCom board game.  It made me happy to know that.

 

I mention a game about being a dinosaur with rocket boots, as well as working with a cat with perhaps some very questionable fashion sense.  My favourite game of the week also has the best title.  Dangerous Highschool Girls in Trouble.

 

We also have a good long talk about Ghost in the Shell and honestly, I would recommend pretty well everyone to go and see it, if only when considering how influential it’s been to so much nerd culture in books, movies and games.

I briefly get into Orwell, which is a cool little interactive novel game about working for a state surveillance system.  I'd certainly recommend it, especially as it's a tenner.  We'll have more details about the game next week though.

We also talk about Qube a puzzle game that is reminiscent of the Portal series, but without the humour.  My opinion is that it is a lot harder though.  I intend to deep dive on this one at some point with it's mechanics.

Hey all,

 

this week I was joined by my friend and boardgame buddy Paul.

 

Paul is a great guy who works for the Microsoft store in Pitt St Sydney.  We've gamed together a lot and always had ourselves a damn good time.

 

Anyways, this week we talk a lot about boardgames and card games as well as the more basic games you can play on your PC, espeically on a budget.

 

Paul introduced Space Dandy, the game and why a couple of their design decisions should feature in more games.  We also have a good talk about why understanding cultural references can make for better enjoyment of gaming.  I cover more Deadbolt and Duelyst.

 

I'd like to look more at the topic of cultural referencing.  Believe it or not, a lot of more previous studies revolved around looking at cultures and how they interact and develop around each other and how contact with each other changes them around.  That's probably going to come up more in a future podcast.
