Morning News Update 30th March 2020

The total confirmed cases of COVID-19 has risen to 1,728, according to the latest figures from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) with the announcement of 196 new cases last night.

The death toll remains 51 while 307 persons have been discharged.

A breakdown of the 196 cases shows that Lagos has 87, kano 24, Gombe 18, Kaduna have 17, 16-FCT Abuja 16, Katsina 10, Sokoto 8, Edo 7, Borno 6, while Yobe, Ebonyi and Adamawa States have one case each.

Lagos remains the epicenter of the pandemic, with a total of 931 cases, followed by the FCT and Kano with 174 and 139 cases.

Germany has granted Nigeria a debt relief worth €22.4 million (N8.9bn) as part of its contribution to the country’s COVID-19 fight.

In a statement by the country’s finance ministry, the debt relief comes in addition to its support of the pandemic response globally.

Morning News Update 28th March 2020

In his third broadcast to the nation yesterday, the president added Kano to the list of States on lockdown with immediate effect for the next two weeks.

There will also be an overnight curfew from 8am to 6am which will start from Monday, May the 4th while all movements will be prohibited during this period except essential services.

President Buhari explains that the decision is in line with the recommendations of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, the various Federal Government Committees that have reviewed socio-economic matters, and the Nigeria Governors Forum.

Fire has gutted the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) petrol station located on college road at the Ogba area of Lagos state. The facility went up in flames after a tanker loaded with petrol exploded while discharging its content. The inferno is said to have spread to some houses nearby, throwing the residents into a state of panic.

Ondo state has recorded three new positive cases of covid-19.

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu explains via his twitter account today that one of the new cases is one of the four suspects arraigned in court last Friday in Akure, the state capital in connection with the murder of Olufunke Olakunrin, the daughter of the national leader of Afenifere, Pa Reuben Fasoranti.

The announcement by the governor brings the total number of confirmed cases of covid-19 in Ondo state to seven, although that is yet to be documented by the NCDC.
