This time it is about the rise of the Carolingians as the new coming power in the Frankish Empire. From the 7th century onwards, their rise is increasingly straight upwards. A lady named Plectrude, who is a member of the Carolingians and resides in Cologne, is the most powerful woman in the Frankish Empire and its secret ruler from 714-717. On the basis of her biography, we want to show her importance for the city but also for the development of the Frankish Empire. She has gone down in the history books as the founder of the church in Cologne and as the stepmother who had her stepson Charles Martel thrown into prison. Find out here why she ultimately lost out to her stepson.
