An exorcism is a religious or spiritual process which attempts to force an evil spirit or demon to leave a person or place which is believed to be possessed. It is an outdated, and at times, abhorrent practice, often born of a misunderstanding of mental illness, and has served to victimise or even criminalise the mentally ill. However, these cases do provide a fascinating insight into the way society and culture has evolved. To those of us who always seek a rational, empirically verifiable explanation for the world around us, that makes these cases that much more fascinating.
