Hello Podcast listeners. Welcome back to 3-minute Japanese, where I introduce a Japanese phrase in 3 minutes.
みなさん、こんにちは。このポッドキャストは、日本語のフレーズを3分で紹介していくコーナーです。さて、第2話となりますが、今回のフレーズは『因みに』です。
In the 2nd episode, the phrase of the day is “因みに.” It means “as a side note,” just for the record,” “by the way,” or “for your information.”
The word “因みに“ is used when the speaker wants to add information to the previous statement as a supplement. The phrase is useful when you explain something and bring up a personal experience as an example. Or when you want to add something to your story while it is not the main topic.
このフレーズは何かを説明する時に、個人的な体験を例えとして導入するときや、本題とは直接関係ないけれども、話の流れで付け加えたい時に使います。
Here are some example sentences.
「千葉からのお土産を持ってきました。みなさんでお召し上がりください。因みに千葉名産の落花生が入っています。」
“I brought a souvenir from Chiba, Japan. Please help yourselves. FYI, it contains peanuts, which are Chiba’s local specialty.
The emphasis in this example is that somebody brought a snack. The fact that it contains peanuts or that peanuts are Chiba’s local specialty is supplemental in this context. This information, however, should be the main message for those with nut allergies.
まあ、ナッツアレルギーの人にとっては「因みに」何て言ってられませんね。
Here are 2 more sentences.
「来月、私は沖縄へ旅行に行きます。因みに沖縄へ行くのは初めてです。」
“I’m going on a trip to Okinawa next month. Incidentally, it will be my first time there.”
「来週、私の従兄弟がニューヨークに遊びにきます。因みに彼は彼女募集中です。」
“My cousin is visiting me in New York next week. By the way, he is looking for a girlfriend.”
Ok, that’s it for today. Until next time.
