Dialogue

    Eric

There's the famous tip screen — they spin it around the second you grab your coffee.

    Lisa

Wait, I'm being asked to tip on a to-go latte? Should I tip on this?

這個我要付小費嗎(tip on this)?

    Eric

That's the Tipflation everyone's complaining about. For a regular to-go coffee, honestly, no tip is fine — just hit "no tip" and walk.

    這就是大家都在罵的 Tipflation(小費通膨)。

    Lisa

But the barista's standing right there watching me. I feel like I'm being shamed into it.

    Eric

Welcome to the guilt-tip. Counter service used to be optional — now every iPad asks. You don't owe 22% on a $5 latte.

    Lisa

So what's the standard? I'm worried I'll undertip and look cheap, or overtip and run out of cash.

    Eric

Sit-down restaurant with a server walking to your table: 18 to 20% is the baseline. Anything less feels stingy unless the service was actually bad.

    Lisa

What about takeout from a sit-down place? Same rules?

    Eric

Lower. A couple of bucks, or 10% if the order's big. You're not paying for table service.

幾塊錢(a couple of bucks),或訂單大的話 10%。

    Lisa

What if there's already a service charge on the bill? Do I tip again?

    Eric

No. If it's already on the bill, don't tip again. That's the double-tip trap. Always check the bottom of the receipt before you sign.

    Lisa

So basically: full tip if a server walks to my table, light tip on takeout, and skip the guilt screen at the coffee counter?

    Eric

Exactly. And for Uber or delivery, just round up to the nearest dollar or add a couple of bucks. You'll be fine.

Vocabulary Boost

    tipflation/ ˌtɪpˈfleɪʃən / n.

    That's the Tipflation everyone's complaining about.

    tip screen/ tɪp skriːn / n.

They spin the tip screen around the second you grab your coffee.

    guilt-tip/ ɡɪlt tɪp / n./v.

feel guilt-tipped into"(被罪惡感逼著付)。

    Welcome to the guilt-tip.

    to-go / takeout/ tə ɡoʊ / ˈteɪkaʊt / adj./n.

to-go" 多用於飲料、咖啡(a to-go latte),"takeout" 多用於餐點(takeout sushi)。

Should I tip on a to-go latte?

    service charge/ ˈsɜːrvɪs tʃɑːrdʒ / n.

If there's already a service charge on the bill, don't tip again.

    baseline/ ˈbeɪslaɪn / n.

18% is the baseline"(18% 是底線)。

    18 to 20% is the baseline. (18–20%

    round up/ raʊnd ʌp / phr.v.

round up to the nearest dollar"(湊到最近一塊錢)。

I'll just round up to the nearest dollar.

a couple of bucks/ ə ˈkʌpəl əv bʌks / phr.

比 "two dollars" 鬆、比 "some money" 精準。

    A couple of bucks, or 10% if the order's big.

    undertip / overtip/ ˌʌndərˈtɪp / ˌoʊvərˈtɪp / v.

I'll undertip and look cheap"(我會付太少看起來小氣)、"I overtipped because I panicked"(我太慌張結果付太多)。

I'm worried I'll undertip and look cheap.

    stingy/ ˈstɪndʒi / adj.

Anything less feels stingy unless the service was actually bad.

    https://mjenglishclass.com/daily-english/not-splitting-the-bill-evenly

Would it be okay if(婉轉請求)、I'd rather(我寧願)到 separate check(分開結帳),

Dialogue

    Ryan

Okay, the bill’s here — $240 total. Should we just split it evenly? That’s $40 each.

    Karen

Hmm, would it be okay if I just covered what I had? I only got the salad and a water tonight.

    Ryan

Oh — yeah, of course. I didn’t even think about that. Sorry, I just defaulted to splitting it down the middle.

抱歉,我下意識就想對半均攤(split it down the middle)。

    Karen

No worries at all! It’s just that everyone else had steak and cocktails, so an even split feels a little off for me.

    Ryan

That’s totally fair. Let me see — your salad was $14 plus the water, so about $16 with tax?

    Karen

Sounds right. Honestly, I’d rather pay for my own than quietly overpay and feel weird about it.

    Ryan

You’re not making it weird — you’re making it fair. Want me to ask for a separate check, or do you just want to Venmo me?

    Karen

Venmo’s easier. I’ll send you $16 right now. Do you mind covering the tip on my part?

    Ryan

Don’t even worry about the tip — I’ve got it. It’s a couple of bucks.

    Karen

You sure? Thanks, Ryan. Next time the coffee’s on me.

謝啦,Ryan。下次咖啡我請(on me)。

    Ryan

Deal. And for what it’s worth, it’s always okay to speak up about the bill. Nobody should pay for someone else’s steak.

順帶一提(for what it’s worth),對帳單開口永遠 OK。

    Karen

Exactly. Quietly overpaying every time just builds resentment. One quick “let’s itemize” saves the friendship.

    https://p.ecpay.com.tw/E34AEEA

Vocabulary Boost

split it evenly/ splɪt ɪt ˈiːvənli / phr.

同義說法 “split it down the middle”(對半分)。

Should we just split it evenly?

    cover/ ˈkʌvər / v.

cover what I had”(付我點的)、”cover the tip”(付小費)、”I’ve got it covered”(我來付)。

Would it be okay if I just covered what I had?

default to/ dɪˈfɔːlt tuː / phr.

I defaulted to splitting it”(我下意識就想均攤)。

I just defaulted to splitting it down the middle.

feel off/ fiːl ɔːf / phr.

An even split feels off”(均攤感覺不太對)。

An even split feels a little off for me.

    separate check/ ˈsɛpərət tʃɛk / n.

美式餐廳固定說法,點餐時先講 “Can we get separate checks?”

Could we get separate checks, please?

cover the tip”(付小費)、”leave a tip”(留小費)。

Do you mind covering the tip on my part?

on me/ ɒn miː / phr.

The coffee’s on me”(咖啡我請)、”Dinner’s on me tonight”(今晚晚餐我請)。要請客時最自然的一句,比 “I will pay for you” 順口太多。店家招待則說 “on the house”。

Next time the coffee’s on me.

for what it’s worth/ fɔːr wɒt ɪts wɜːrθ / phr.

For what it’s worth, it’s always okay to speak up about the bill.

    resentment/ rɪˈzɛntmənt / n.

builds resentment”(累積怨氣)。

Quietly overpaying every time just builds resentment.

    itemize/ ˈaɪtəmaɪz / v.

let’s itemize”(我們分開算)。

One quick “let’s itemize” saves the friendship.

Dialogue

    Jake

Hi there! What can I get started for you?

    Mia

Hi! Can I get a medium latte, but with oat milk instead of regular?

    Jake

Sure thing. Oat milk latte, medium. Anything else?

    Mia

Could you make it half the sugar? And add an extra shot, please.

    Jake

You got it — extra shot, light on the sugar. Hot or iced?

    Mia

Iced, please. Oh, and easy on the ice if that's okay.

喔,可以的話幫我少冰(easy on the ice)。

    Jake

No problem. Light ice means more drink anyway. For here or to go?

    Mia

To go, thanks. Can I also get the caramel drizzle on the side instead of inside?

焦糖醬(caramel drizzle)可以另外裝(on the side)不要加在裡面嗎?

    Jake

Caramel on the side, got it. Anything to eat with that?

    Mia

I'm good, thanks. How long's the wait?

    Jake

About five minutes. Can I get a name for the order?

    Mia

    It's Mia — M-I-A. Thanks so much!

    我叫 Mia——M-I-A。

    https://p.ecpay.com.tw/E34AEEA

Vocabulary Boost

    oat milk/ oʊt mɪlk / n.

其他常見:almond milk(杏仁奶)、soy milk(豆漿)、coconut milk(椰奶)。

A medium latte with oat milk.

instead of/ ɪnˈstɛd əv / phr.

Oat milk instead of regular.

    extra shot/ ˈɛkstrə ʃɑt / n.

Add an extra shot, please.

easy on the ~/ ˈiːzi ɒn ðə / phr.

easy on the ice"(少冰)、"easy on the sugar"(少糖)、"easy on the cream"(少奶油)。

Easy on the ice, please.

on the side/ ɒn ðə saɪd / phr.

點沙拉 "dressing on the side"(醬另外裝)超實用。

Caramel on the side, please.

    drizzle/ ˈdrɪzəl / n./v.

caramel drizzle"(焦糖淋醬)、"chocolate drizzle"(巧克力淋醬)。

The caramel drizzle on the side.

for here or to go/ fɔr hɪr ɔr tə ɡoʊ / phr.

for here"(內用,用店內杯)、"to go"(外帶,用紙杯)。英式說法是 "eat in or takeaway"。聽到這句直接回 "to go" 或 "for here" 就好。

For here or to go? — To go, thanks.

Sure thing / You got it/ phr.

You got it — extra shot, light on the sugar.

Dialogue

    Eric

Wait — Nina, did you do something different? You look… I dunno, just good today.

    Nina

Ha, classic move. "You look good today" — implying I usually don't?

    Eric

God, no. Let me try that again. I love how the new haircut frames your face — it really suits you.

    Nina

Oh — thank you. That's actually a real compliment.

    Eric

See, I'm learning. My ex told me "you're pretty" sounds like a 7-year-old wrote it.

    Nina

Your ex was right. The specifics are what land. "Pretty" is generic — what's specific about it?

    Eric

Okay so — I love how you always wear those small gold earrings. They're, like, your signature.

    Nina

That's the move. Once you go specific, it stops being a hit-on and starts being noticing.

    Eric

Wait, so I can't say someone looks beautiful?

    Nina

You can — but pair it with what. "You look beautiful in that color" is fine. "You look beautiful" alone sounds like you're about to ask for a favor.

You look beautiful in that color"(妳穿那個顏色很美)就 OK。

    Eric

    Noted. Same rule for guys?

    Nina

Same. "I love how you handled that meeting" beats "You're so smart." Skip "smart" — go for what they actually did.

    Eric

Got it. So compliments are basically receipts — describe the moment, not the person.

    Nina

Exactly. Vague flattery is a red flag. Specific noticing is friendship currency.

    https://p.ecpay.com.tw/E34AEEA

Vocabulary Boost

    suit (someone)/ suːt / v.

比 "look good on you" 更口語、更短,是讚美結尾的萬用句。

    It really suits you.

    signature/ ˈsɪɡnətʃər / n.

Those gold earrings are your signature.

    generic/ dʒəˈnɛrɪk / adj.

    "Pretty" is too generic. (「

    specifics/ spəˈsɪfɪks / n.

The specifics are what land.

    land/ lænd / v.

That joke didn't land" 就是「沒人笑」。

Specific compliments land. Generic ones don't.

hit on (someone)/ hɪt ɒn / phr. v.

Specific compliments don't sound like you're hitting on her.

    pair (X) with (Y)/ pɛr wɪð / v.

    把 X 配上 Y。讚美 anchor 規則:beautiful 一定要 pair with 具體的點——in that color、in that dress、with that haircut。

You can say beautiful — but pair it with a detail.

    flattery/ ˈflætəri / n.

Vague flattery is a red flag.

red flag/ rɛd flæɡ / idiom

"You're perfect" on day one is a red flag.

    receipts/ rɪˈsiːts / n. (slang)

Show me the receipts" 是「給我看證據」。

    Compliments are basically receipts.

Dialogue

    Brian

Hey. Thanks for coming down so fast.

    Chloe

Of course. You sounded weird on Slack. What happened?

    Brian

I got laid off. Twenty minutes ago. Fifteen-minute calendar invite, no warning.

    Chloe

Wait — what? You're kidding. You're on the core team.

    Brian

Was. They restructured the whole division. I'm not the only one — about forty people across product and eng.

    Chloe

God. I'm so sorry. Did they at least give you a decent severance package?

    Brian

Three months plus my unused PTO. Healthcare extended through August. It's not nothing.

    Chloe

That's actually solid for this market. Are you okay?

    Brian

Honestly? I'm blindsided. But if I had built up my side projects last year, I wouldn't be panicking about runway right now.

    Chloe

Don't beat yourself up. Nobody saw this coming. AI restructuring just hit our floor first.

    Brian

I should have seen it coming. Two rounds of "voluntary exits" in six months — that was the writing on the wall.

    Chloe

Listen — I know a recruiter at Anthropic. Let me put in a good word for you. You'd be a strong fit.

    Brian

Seriously? That would mean a lot. I'll send you my updated resume tonight.

    Chloe

Send it. And Brian — you'll land on your feet. You always do.

Vocabulary Boost

    layoff / lay off/ ˈleɪɔf / n. / v.

I got laid off in the restructuring.

    blindsided/ ˈblaɪndˌsaɪdɪd / adj.

I was completely blindsided by the news.

    severance package/ ˈsɛvərəns ˈpækɪdʒ / n.

My severance package covers three months.

    restructure/ riˈstrʌktʃər / v.

They restructured the whole division.

    runway/ ˈrʌnweɪ / n.

I have about six months of runway.

writing on the wall/ ˈraɪtɪŋ ɒn ðə wɔːl / idiom

That was the writing on the wall.

put in a good word/ pʊt ɪn ə ɡʊd wɜːrd / idiom

Let me put in a good word for you.

land on your feet/ lænd ɒn jʊər fiːt / idiom

You'll land on your feet. You always do.

PTO (Paid Time Off)/ piː tiː oʊ / n.

Three months plus my unused PTO.

Sentence Patterns

    1. I got laid off.

而不是 "was + p.p."。

I got laid off last Friday in the AI restructuring.

    💡 文化提示:千萬不要說 "I was fired"——fired 暗示你犯錯被開除,laid off 表示公司決策。 寫履歷的 "Reason for leaving" 欄位也要寫 laid off due to company restructuring,不要寫 fired。

    2. If I had X, I wouldn't be Y now.

前半 if I had + p.p. I wouldn't be + ing

If I had built up my side projects last year, I wouldn't be panicking about runway right now.

(If I had X, I would have Y)是「過去 vs 過去」——當初沒做、結果也已成定局。

    3. I should have seen it coming.

Should have + p.p.

Two rounds of voluntary exits in six months — I should have seen it coming.

說完 "I should have seen it coming" 後通常會被對方接 "Don't beat yourself up"(別自責)。

    4. Let me put in a good word for you.

Let me + 動詞" 表達主動承擔的禮貌——比 "I will" 更柔、不顯居功。

例:I know someone at Google. Let me put in a good word for you — they're hiring on the infra team.

朋友主動說這句時,正確的接話是 "That would mean a lot"(這對我意義重大)而不是 "Thanks"。 被 layoff 的人最重要的資產,就是這種會主動 put in a good word 的朋友。

    5. It's not nothing.

Three months severance plus healthcare — it's not nothing.

    💡 文化提示:美國人講壞消息時喜歡用 understatement(低調表達)——明明三個月 severance 是好條件,但說 "it's not nothing" 比 "it's great" 更得體。

Dialogue

    Kevin

Hey Lisa, do you have a few minutes? I’d like to discuss my compensation.

    Lisa

    Lisa

Sure, take a seat. What’s on your mind?

    Kevin

I was wondering if we could talk about adjusting my salary. I’ve been here almost two years now.

    Lisa

Okay, walk me through your thinking.

    Kevin

Based on my contributions this year — leading the API migration and onboarding two junior devs — I think it’s a fair conversation to have.

    Lisa

Those are real wins. What number are you thinking?

    Kevin

Looking at market rate for my role, I’d be looking for a bump in the ten to twelve percent range.

    Lisa

That’s on the higher end. Help me make the case to finance.

    Kevin

Happy to. I pulled data from three job boards — same title, same years of experience — and the median is actually above my current base.

    Lisa

Fair. And the migration project — that shipped two weeks early, right?

    Kevin

Two weeks early, and we cut response times by forty percent. Would you be open to factoring that into the review?

    Lisa

I can’t promise the full twelve, but I’d appreciate it if you could put this in writing — the projects, the numbers, the ask. I’ll take it upstairs this week.

    Kevin

Done. I’ll have it in your inbox tonight. Thanks for hearing me out.

    Lisa

That’s what I’m here for. And Kevin — coming in prepared like this? That’s exactly how it should be done.

Vocabulary Boost

    compensation/ ˌkɑːmpənˈseɪʃən / n.

I’d like to discuss my compensation.

    adjust/ əˈdʒʌst / v.

Can we talk about adjusting my salary?

    contribution/ ˌkɑːntrɪˈbjuːʃən / n.

Based on my contributions this year…

    market rate/ ˈmɑːrkɪt reɪt / n.

Looking at market rate for my role…

    bump/ bʌmp / n.

I’d be looking for a bump in the ten to twelve percent range.

make the case/ meɪk ðə keɪs / phr.

Help me make the case to finance.

    factor in/ ˈfæktər ɪn / phr. v.

Could you factor that into the review?

take it upstairs/ teɪk ɪt ˈʌpˌsterz / idiom

I’ll take it upstairs this week.

hear someone out/ hɪr ˌwʌn ˈaʊt / phr. v.

Thanks for hearing me out.

Sentence Patterns

    1. I’d like to discuss…

比 “I want to talk about” 專業,比 “Can I talk to you” 直接。

例:I’d like to discuss my compensation.

    💡 文化提示:千萬別開口就是 “I want a raise”。 I’d like to bring up / I wanted to touch on。

    2. I was wondering if we could…

I was wondering if we could talk about adjusting my salary.

重點是過去式:present tense “I wonder” 太直接,past tense “I was wondering” 才有「我已經想了很久,現在小聲問」的禮貌感。

    3. Based on…, it’s a fair conversation to have.

Based on my contributions this year, I think it’s a fair conversation to have.

    💡 文化提示:never 說 “I deserve more”,那是情緒。”It’s a fair conversation to have” 是 calibrated humility——客氣但有底氣。

    4. Would you be open to…?

Would you be open to factoring that into the review?

    💡 文化提示:問 “Can you do X?” 問 “Would you be open to X?”

    5. I’d appreciate it if you could…

I’d appreciate it if you could put this in writing.

    English Dialogue

Kevin: Did you catch the game last night?

Hannah: I caught the last 10 minutes — turned it on while I was cooking. What did I miss?

Kevin: The whole thing. We were down by 12 in the third, and then the bench guys went absolutely crazy.

Hannah: That’s why my Twitter was going nuts. Who was clutch?

Kevin: Jordan Reyes. Three-pointer with 8 seconds left, full defender in his face. Absolutely insane.

Hannah: I’m not even a Lakers fan, but that’s appointment TV at this point.

Kevin: Right? Total underdog moment — three bench rookies, nobody had them on the radar two months ago.

Hannah: How close was the finish?

Kevin: It came down to the wire. Reyes’ shot tied it, then free throws with 0.4 on the clock to win it.

    Hannah: 0.4 seconds? That’s a nail-biter. I would’ve had a heart attack.

Kevin: The bar I was at went silent for the free throw, then exploded. Best moment of the year.

Hannah: Okay so we’ve got it in the bag for the series now, right?

Kevin: Don’t jinx it. They’re a team that lives for the comeback. We can’t blow it from here.

    Kevin:

    Kevin:Jordan Reyes。

    Hannah:

    Hannah:

Vocabulary Boost

    catch (the game) / kætʃ / v.

I caught the second half on replay.(我看回放追了下半場。)

down by ___ / daʊn baɪ / phr.

We were down by 5 going into halftime.(中場休息時我們落後 5 分。)

    clutch / klʌtʃ / adj.

He’s the most clutch player in the league.(他是聯盟裡最關鍵時刻的球員。)

    underdog / ˈʌndərˌdɔːɡ / n.

came down to the wire / keɪm daʊn tu ðə waɪər / phr.

The election came down to the wire.(這場選舉拖到最後一刻才分勝負。)

    nail-biter / ˈneɪlˌbaɪtər / n.

That final episode was a total nail-biter.(那集大結局根本是緊張到咬指甲。)

    comeback / ˈkʌmˌbæk / n.

That was the greatest comeback in playoff history.(那是季後賽史上最神的逆轉。)

    blow it / bloʊ ɪt / v.

They were up by 20 and they blew it.(他們領先 20 分還是輸掉。)

Sentence Patterns

Did you catch the game last night? →

Did you catch the game last night?(你昨晚有看比賽嗎?)| 替換詞:Did you watch(你看了嗎)/Were you watching(你那時候有在看嗎)

台灣人聊比賽常會直譯「你看了嗎」變 “Did you see it”,但 native 在運動語境裡幾乎都用 catch。同樣結構也適用 podcast、Netflix——”Did you catch that episode?”

We were down by ___ and then ___ → 我們落後…然後…

We were down by 12 in the third, and then the bench guys went absolutely crazy.(第三節落後 12 分,然後板凳球員整個炸開。) We were trailing by X(我們落後 X 分)/We were behind X going into Y(進入 Y 時候我們落後 X)

    I’m not even a [team] fan, but ___ → 我又不是…

    I’m not even a Lakers fan, but that’s appointment TV at this point.(我又不是 Lakers 粉,但這已經是必看節目了。) I don’t even follow X, but(我又沒在追 X,但)/You don’t have to be a fan to(你不用是粉絲也會…)

It came down to the wire →

It came down to the wire. Reyes’ shot tied it, then free throws with 0.4 on the clock.(拖到最後一刻。 It went down to the last second(拖到最後一秒)/It was decided in the final moments(最後一刻才決定)

Came down to the wire 如果是進行式,會說 “It’s coming down to the wire.”。

We’ve got it in the bag →

We’ve got it in the bag for the series now, right?(系列賽現在已經穩了齁?)| 替換詞:It’s a done deal(已經板上釘釘)/We’ve sealed it(我們封關了)

這篇從「I'd like to return」到「Is there any way to get a refund」,

    English Dialogue

Ryan: Hi, I bought this Bluetooth speaker here last weekend, and it stopped charging after two days. I’d like to return it.

Chloe: Sorry to hear that. Do you have the receipt with you?

Ryan: I do — here you go. I tried two different cables, and it just won’t power up.

Chloe: Got it. Let me take a quick look… Yeah, the charging port looks fine on the outside, so it’s probably a defective unit.

Ryan: Is there any way to get a refund? I really need a working speaker for a trip this weekend.

Chloe: Since it’s within fourteen days and clearly defective, you’re entitled to a full refund or an exchange — whichever you prefer.

Ryan: Honestly, I’d rather just exchange it for the same model if you have one in stock.

Chloe: Let me check the back… Good news, we’ve got one in stock. Would you like me to test it before you take it home?

Ryan: That’d be great. The last thing I want is to drive back here on Friday.

Chloe: Totally fair. I’ll plug it in, pair it with my phone, and let you hear it.

Ryan: Perfect. While you do that, can you also throw in the original packaging? Mine got pretty banged up.

Chloe: No problem. The new one comes sealed, so you’ll get the box and all the accessories.

Ryan: You’re a lifesaver. Thanks for making this so painless.

    Chloe:

    Ryan:

Vocabulary Boost

    defective / dɪˈfɛktɪv / adj.

This batch had several defective units.(這批貨有好幾台是瑕疵品。)

    receipt / rɪˈsiːt / n.

Keep the receipt just in case you need to return it.(收據先留著,怕之後要退。)

    refund / ˈriːfʌnd / n.

(也可當動詞 refund,但口語多半 “get a refund” / “give you a refund”)

    I’d like a refund, please.(我想要退款,謝謝。)

    exchange / ɪksˈtʃeɪndʒ / n. v.

Can I do an exchange instead of a refund?(我可以換貨不要退款嗎?)

entitled to / ɪnˈtaɪtəld tuː / phr.

You’re entitled to a free replacement under warranty.(在保固內你有權獲得免費更換。)

in stock / ɪn stɑːk / phr.

Is the black one still in stock?(黑色那款還有貨嗎?)

    plug in / plʌɡ ɪn / phr.v.

Did you plug the charger in properly?(你充電器有插好嗎?)

    banged up / bæŋd ʌp / adj.

The box arrived all banged up.(盒子寄來時撞得亂七八糟。)

    sealed / siːld / adj.

Make sure the package is still sealed.(確認包裝還沒拆過。)

    accessories / əkˈsɛsəriz / n.

The box includes all the original accessories.(盒裡含全部原廠配件。)

Sentence Patterns

    I’d like to return … →

    I’d like to return this jacket — it doesn’t fit.(我想退這件外套,尺寸不合。)| 替換詞:I want to return(我要退,較直接)/ I’m here to return(我來退…)

I’d like to” 是 “I would like to” 的縮寫,加上 would 就客氣很多,店員聽起來舒服、流程也會順一點。

Is there any way to …?

Is there any way to get this swapped today?(有辦法今天就換好嗎?)| 替換詞:Would it be possible to(有沒有可能)/ Can you make it work so(你能不能讓…

比 “Can I get a refund?”

    I’d rather just …

    I’d rather just exchange it.(我寧願就直接換一台。) I’d prefer to just(我比較想就…)/ I’d rather not(我寧願不要…)

Would you like me to …?

Would you like me to wrap it up for you?(要不要我幫你包起來?)| 替換詞:Want me to(要我…

    The last thing I want is …

    The last thing I want is another delay.(我最不想再被延誤一次。) I really don’t want to(我真的不想…)/ I’d hate to(我超不想…)

    「How to say?」「Open the light」「I very like it」「Of course!」「Same same」

    English Dialogue

Tina: Ryan, can I ask you something honestly? My American client said my English is cute but Mandarin-influenced. What does that even mean?

Ryan: Ha! He probably noticed a few patterns. Don’t take it personally—every Taiwanese English speaker has a pet peeve list someone could make.

Tina: Now I’m dying to know. What did I say wrong?

Ryan: Okay, first one—did you say “How to say?” when you forgot a word?

    Tina: Maybe. That’s wrong?

Ryan: It comes across as broken. Native speakers say “How do you say…?” or “What’s the word for…?”

    Tina: Oh no. What else?

Ryan: “Open the light.” We don’t open lights, we turn them on. And turn them off, not close them.

Tina: I literally said that yesterday.

Ryan: Number three—“I very like it.” Skip “very” before “like.” Just say “I really like it” or “I love it.”

    Tina: Number four?

Ryan: “Of course.” Be careful with that one. In English, “of course” can sound a little sarcastic, like “duh, obviously.” Try swapping it for “Sure” or “Definitely.”

Tina: Wait, really? I say “of course” all day.

Ryan: And finally—“Same same.” We don’t repeat words for emphasis like that. Native speakers say “pretty similar” or “basically the same.”

Tina: Five strikes in one conversation. I’m going to overthink every sentence now.

Ryan: Don’t! Just notice them and gradually swap. The nuance comes with practice. Your English is great—just a little Mandarin-flavored.

    Tina:Ryan,

    Tina:

    Tina:

母語者會說「How do you say…?」或「What’s the word for…?」

    Tina:

    Ryan:「Open the light.」

    Tina:

    Ryan:第三個——「I very like it.」 直接說「I really like it」或「I love it」。

    Tina:

    Ryan:「Of course.」

    Ryan:最後一個——「Same same.」 母語者會說「pretty similar」或「basically the same」。

Vocabulary Boost

    Mandarin-influenced / ˈmæn.də.rɪn ˈɪn.flu.ənst / adj. →

Her email sounds Mandarin-influenced.(她的 email 帶有明顯中文味。)

    pet peeve / ˌpet ˈpiːv / n.

Loud chewing is my biggest pet peeve.(吃東西大聲嘴是我最受不了的事。)

    turn on / turn off / tɝːn ɑːn / phr. v.

Please turn off the AC before you leave.(離開前請關冷氣。)

    sarcastic / sɑːrˈkæs.tɪk / adj.

    That sounded a bit sarcastic—are you upset?(你語氣有點諷刺耶,你不爽嗎?)

    swap / swɑːp / v.

Try to swap “very” for “really” before verbs.(動詞前把 very 換成 really。)

    nuance / ˈnuː.ɑːns / n.

The nuance between sure and of course is huge.(sure 和 of course 的細微差異很大。)

    overthink / ˌoʊ.vɚˈθɪŋk / v.

    Don’t overthink it—just say it.(別想太多,講就對了。)

    pretty similar / ˈprɪt̬.i ˈsɪm.ə.lɚ / phr. → 相當類似(取代 same same)

These two products are pretty similar.(這兩個產品蠻像的。)

basically the same / ˈbeɪ.sɪ.kli ðə seɪm / phr.

It’s basically the same as the old version.(基本上跟舊版一樣。)

    Mandarin-flavored / ˈmæn.də.rɪn ˈfleɪ.vɚd / adj. →

Your English is Mandarin-flavored in a charming way.(你的英文中文味,但很可愛。)

Sentence Patterns

How do you say …? 英文怎麼說?(取代 How to say)

How do you say “報帳” in English?(「報帳」英文怎麼說?)| 替換詞:What’s the word for(這個的字是什麼)/ How would you say(會怎麼說)

直譯成 How to say?

    It comes across as …

That phrase comes across as rude.(那句聽起來很沒禮貌。)| 替換詞:comes across as broken(破英文)/ comes across as sarcastic(諷刺)

    Skip … before …

    Skip “very” before “like.”(like 前面不要加 very。)| 替換詞:Skip “the” before(前面不要加 the)/ Skip “to” before(前面不要加 to)

    Try swapping X for Y. → 試試把 X 換成 Y。

    Try swapping “of course” for “sure.”(試著把 of course 換成 sure。)| 替換詞:swapping A for B(把 A 換 B)/ replacing X with Y(用 Y 取代 X)

    💡 注意是 swap X for Y,介系詞用 for 不是 with(with 是 replace X with Y)。

Be careful with that one. →

Be careful with “of course”—it can sound rude.(of course 要小心用,可能聽起來很沒禮貌。)| 替換詞:Watch out for(注意)/ Be cautious with(小心使用)

    還有萬用句「Is there any way I can…?」

Karen: Hi, sorry to bother you, but the Wi-Fi in my room keeps dropping.

David: Oh no, I'm really sorry to hear that. How long has it been spotty?

Karen: Since I checked in this morning. I can barely get a signal near the bed.

David: That's frustrating, especially when you're trying to work. Have you tried reconnecting with the credentials printed on your keycard?

Karen: Yeah, three times. It connects, then dies after a minute. There's so much lag I can't even open my email.

David: Got it. We had a brief outage earlier, but the router on the 8th floor should be back online. Let me reset it from our end.

Karen: Is there any way I can use a wired connection? I have a Zoom call in twenty minutes.

David: Unfortunately the rooms aren't wired, but the business lounge has stable Wi-Fi as a workaround. I can get you in right now.

Karen: That works. Could you send someone up later to take a look at my room too?

David: Of course. I'll send our tech up within the hour. And honestly, for the trouble, would you mind if we comped your breakfast tomorrow as compensation?

Karen: That's really kind, thank you. I just need the internet to work for my meeting.

David: Totally understand. Let me walk you to the lounge now so your call won't miss a beat.

    David:

    Karen:

There’s so much lag on this video call.(這通視訊嚴重延遲。)

    credentials / krəˈden.ʃəlz / n.

(比 username and password 更專業,IT 場合常見)

Please enter your Wi-Fi credentials on the keycard.(請輸入房卡上的 Wi-Fi 帳密。)

    outage / ˈaʊ.t̬ɪdʒ / n.

We had a power outage last night.(我們昨晚停電。)

    router / ˈruː.t̬ɚ / n.

    Try restarting the router.(試試看重啟路由器。)

    reset / ˌriːˈset / v.

    Let me reset your password.(我幫你重設密碼。)

    workaround / ˈwɝː.kə.raʊnd / n.

    Using the lobby Wi-Fi is a temporary workaround.(用大廳的 Wi-Fi 是暫時的變通方法。)

    compensation / ˌkɑːm.pənˈseɪ.ʃən / n.

We’d like to offer breakfast as compensation.(我們想以早餐作為補償。)

    comp / kɑːmp / v.

    The manager comped our drinks.(經理免費請我們喝飲料。)

    barely / ˈber.li / adv.

    I can barely hear you.(我幾乎聽不到你。)

Sentence Patterns

    The Wi-Fi keeps dropping.(Wi-Fi 一直斷線。)| 替換詞:keeps freezing(一直當機)/ keeps shutting off(一直自動關機)

    I can barely + V →

    I can barely get a signal near the bed.(床邊幾乎收不到訊號。)| 替換詞:barely hear(幾乎聽不到)/ barely see(幾乎看不到)

    Is there any way I can …?

    Is there any way I can use a wired connection?(有沒有什麼辦法可以用有線連線?)| 替換詞:get a late checkout(延後退房)/ switch rooms(換房間)

比「I want…」「Can I have…」

Could you send someone up to …?

Could you send someone up to take a look at my room?(可以派人上來看一下我房間嗎?)| 替換詞:take a look(檢查)/ deliver extra towels(送多的毛巾)

take a look 比 fix it 更柔和,不會讓對方覺得你在下命令。

    Would you mind if + 過去式…?

Would you mind if we comped your breakfast?(你介意我們免費招待早餐嗎?)| 替換詞:if I switched rooms(如果我換房間)/ if I checked out late(如果我延後退房)

回答 No, not at all 才是「不介意,請便」,別答錯。
