One thing that you may not know by looking at me is that there's a lot of foreign blood running through my veins. My Mother was born in Colombia, South America, to a Swiss Father. Fun Fact: My Mom, Aunt, Sister, Cousins, and I all have dual citizenship between the US and Switzerland!
Growing up in Southern California, I was often made fun of for speaking Spanish and being more tan than others. I was often asked if I had jumped the border with my family, and my Mom was often approached asking how much she was being paid to babysit while my sister and I were playing in the park.
When it comes to diversity, I shared these two points:
1) Seek to understand. Learn from someone who looks different than you, reach out to them, and value their differences. Don't draw quick conclusions. Not all Hispanics are Mexicans and not all Asians are Chinese. Find out where someone is from, what they enjoy doing, etc. You'll learn new things and gain new perspectives.
2) Everybody Matters. You can learn something from anyone, regardless of their title and status. I shared that the most important people that I see in my full time role at @boeing are the mechanics, not the executives. If you look at an organization chart, you may think the opposite. You never know if the janitor may be the next big CEO, etc. Don't ignore these people, or anyone for that matter.
