All right, so we are on part 2 of our series talking about combatting the lies of the enemy.

So last week we started talking about the armor of God. I don’t know if any of you are like me, but most of my Christian life, when I heard teachings on the armor of God, it was all surface level…nothing that I could really take home and apply to my life. I didn’t even understand what each of the pieces really meant.

Last week, we talked about 2 pieces of that armor…the Belt of Truth and the Breastplate of Righteousness.

So now we’re going to talk about the shoes of the Gospel of Peace. Most of the time when we see Roman soldiers wearing shoes, we see them wearing lace up sandals that come up to their knees. These actually were not the shoes that the Roman soldiers wore in battle.

The shoes that the Roman soldiers wore in battle were made out of meta and were made up of two parts…the shoes itself and then something that looked like a metal shin guard that you would wear for soccer…except it extended up passed the knee. The bottom of the shoes were not flat, but actually had very dangerous spikes sticking out of the bottom of them that were one to three inches long. If we think about it, it may seem kind of crazy that Paul would use peace to describe these dangerous shoes, right?

Paul understood something, though. He understood that these shoes of Peace both protected us from tough terrain and kept our feet stable on rocky ground, but these shoes are also a dangerous weapon to the enemy. When the enemy tries to attack us, with the peace of God, we just have to remind him that he has been defeated and belongs under our feet.

The fourth peace of armor we’re going to talk about is the Shield of Faith. Ephesians 6:16, Paul tells us to take up the shield of faith, where with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.

When the Roman soldiers carried the shield, it was directly connected to their belt. It’s so important to realize that our faith is directly connected to the Word of God.

Roman soldiers carried two types of shields into battle. The first type of shield was a small, round shield that was more for decoration when they were in a public ceremony or a parade.

The second type of shield that the Roman soldier carried…and this is the one that Paul was talking about when he talks about the armor of God is referred to as a door that was wide in width and long in length. That should give you an idea of how big this shield was. This shield was meant to completely cover the Roman soldier. The faith of God is like that…it completely covers us. The faith that God has given you is enough to cover you in every area of your life…to cover every need you will ever have.
