After a little over a year of playing games on Sunday afternoon, the Houston Colt .45s asked the National League for permission to play on Sunday night. Permission was granted, and on June 9, 1963, the first Sunday night game in Major League history was played. The night game was a mixed blessing at Colt Stadium. Though with the temperature at 79 degrees was considerably cooler than the afternoon high, there were mosquitoes everywhere. In 1929, Billy Southworth took over the Cardinals as manager. He tried a new tough style of managing, and it didn’t work. He was demoted to managing their Rochester club where he won 3 pennants in a row, but after a bad year and excessive drinking in grievance of his wife’s death, he was let go again. Things started to turn around for Billy in 1935—he got remarried, and Branch Rickey gave him another chance with the Cards.
