  • Doctor calls for tobacco excise cut to combat rise in black market trading

There is a rise in the tobacco black market trade which is putting the government under pressure to cut, or at least freeze the excise on cigarettes.

Deakin University's Dr James Martin told Peter Fegan on 4BC Breakfast, "I think obviously there's a good intention behind this [Cigarette taxes] to try and get smokers to quit."

"That's been undercut now by the widespread availability of black market cigarettes and that availability means that the high cigarette taxes are not doing what the government says they should be, which is to reduce smoking," Dr Martin continued.

  • 'Put the egos away': David Littleproud calls for vision in rebuilding North QLD roads

Flooding is still causing chaos across North Queensland with the Bruce Highway cut off in multiple spots and over 300 roads are closed.

The rainfall and flooding in the region was a rarer than a one-in-2000-year event.

National’s Leader David Littleproud told Peter Fegan on 4BC Breakfast, "I was an emergency services minister and I remember we rebuilt the same bridge three times."

"Why wouldn't we build it to a higher standard so it doesn't get washed out?"

"This is where you just need some common sense and put the egos away between state and federal governments, it's having the courage to actually, where there needs to be betterment, you build it better," Mr. Littleproud said.
