WORLD PRISONER DAY – 10 AUG
Origins:
Prisoner's Justice Day originated in Canada in 1974, following the death of a
prisoner in segregation at Millhaven Institution.
Purpose:
The day is dedicated to remembering those who have died in prison and to
advocating for changes to the prison system.
Focus:
The day highlights the need for better prison conditions, including access to
healthcare, mental health support, and protection from violence.
Advocacy:
It's a day to call for an end to violence and neglect in prisons and to promote
rehabilitation and restorative justice.
